Actually mine was worse as I actually had to do a system restore to avoid a bad memory references after the update. The only way I can open .avi's is to right click and choose open with and select Play With Internet Explorer. I couldn't even do that - I had to go into the Control Panel to reassociate everything. Now I can at least play the .avi file, but it won't launch automatically. I've got to figure out how to make that work properly. I've been busy working on the new boat and haven't been online much. I've had her out on Quinsig a few times and I think I've gotten most of the bugs out... http://www.monkeybutler.com/boat/c65.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/boat/c71.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/boat/c35.jpg ... but I'm waiting on some parts for the Powerwinch and I still have a few hardware items to fix but I'm hoping to get out on the salt next week. The fishing lesson offer still good? 10-4 - anytime you want. You have my email address and we can do either Fisher's Island/Westerly Reef or Narragansett Bay - take your pick. I might suggest you get a Sea//Tow or BoatUS towing membership though before you go. If something craps out and you are a ways from your launch ramp, it's expensive without the towing insurance. |

Since I upgraded Quicktime to Quicktime Pro and installed iTunes, I can't open .avi files. The QT player will open, but it doesn't play the video. I took another .avi with my cellphone camera and it won't open or play that either - just a blank screen. It also won't play in Windows Media. It will open, but the video won't play. However I do get sound. WTH? This all started with the upgrade and the new version of iTunes - avi's used to play just fine and dandy in Windows. QT won't play mov either. The other issue is that all .jpgs now open in QT. I can't switch it back to the Wiindows display. Any ideas on why that happened? And how to fix it? Final comment - Microsoft isn't the Devil, it's Apple. Do a search for this codex: Combined-Community-Codec-Pack-2006-07-28.exe That will play pretty much anything. Thanks, but the last time I tried that, it screwed everything up worse than the iTunes update. |

Click the change button and associate it with Windows Media Player or whatever program you andt it associated with. Then click OK OK OK as many times as it takes to close all the windows. That should do it for you. Not in the latest version of IE. It's in a completely different place. |

I change it, it sets itself right back to what it was. For one, the avi codec sounds like it's hosed. You can either use the System File Checker utility in Windows Start run cmd, enter, sfc/scannow, enter. That will make sure all the Windows files are correct. Or and Google "avi codecs" and you see any number of places to get an avi codec. John H suggested probably the easiest way to re-associate avi files with Windows Media Player. Like a lot of things in Windows there are several ways to reach the same end result. Thanks. I figured it out - had to do it from the Control Panel - it's in Folder options. Still can't get them to play automatically, but I'll figure that out later. |

Don't worry about little things like that. Steve Jobs knows what's best for your infidel WinDoze computer... I hate Quicktime. Every time I've installed it, something has gotten messed up. I bought QT Pro as a quick avi editor - the damn computer hasn't work correctly since I installed it. Every time I've installed it, something has gotten messed up.
