Chuck posted that deal last week about transponders for small craft as the next great issue facing boaters? Apparently, Homeland Security is dead serious about the proposal as well as requiring a personal document, such as a photo id/license for ALL boaters - not just those with higher powered boats or high speed boats. At the moment, the proposal only affects areas where there are high security concerns - like New London Harbor for example, or for boat transiting areas of security concern - eventually it will reach every boater in some way or fashion. The cost of the transponders will, of course, be paid for by the boaters. Would the transponder have to be on while the boat is being trailered? That could get really interesting! |

Then the divorce lawyers will subpoena the transponder records. Article in the local paper about the Fastrac toll bridge and road transponder records being requested by divorce lawyers. |

Article in the local paper about the Fastrac toll bridge and road transponder records being requested by divorce lawyers.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Brings up some scarey stuff when you consider the state of Oregon (iirc) is testing a tax policy based on a transponder in your car which tells them where you drive and on what type of roads. There are different levels of taxation based on use. You know how 1 the environuts would love to tax us based on their opinion of boat types. IE the blowboaters and hupowered boats would love to tax us stinkpots out of the water. 2, like smokers, we are a small number of the electorate and easy marks for pandering politicians... |

That trial balloon, one of many, went nowhere AFAIK. Even so, I do see some dark days ahead for those of us who dare use petrol powered play toys weather on or off water. |
