Rumor has it that those black lobsters have longer dodads than the red ones and some of the red lobster chicks dig it. You're probably not far off. My theory is that a female lobster's egg was fertilized by two males, one red and one black. The single cell split into two cells (which is why animals are pretty much mirror images on center line) and then into 2 billion, with the starboard portion of the lobster adopting the traits of the red father and the port side adopting at least the pigmentation of the black father. May not be biologically sound, but it would seem like a general sort of clue for further investigation. As a boater, I'm going to lobby for a two tone lobster that's navigationally correct. We need to come up with one that's green on the starboard side and red to port. Just think, we could hollow that sucka out and super glue it to the foredeck of a runabout, stick a 12- volt lamp inside and have a neat looking combo light. (Probably shouldn't have mentioned that idea- we'll see lobster-shaped running lights appearing at all the major supply houses). |
