Default 79 mercury stuck in forward

Hi all,

I recently had a friend change the impeller on my boat. This is the first
boat I've ever owned and know nothing about them. After he changed that, it
seems to be stuck in forward gear, it does not go into neutral or reverse.
When we took the lower unit off again, we tried turning the gear shifter
shaft, and could not seem to get it out of forward gear. We were also
turning the prop while trying to get it to shift, but that didn't seem to
help either. It was working fine before that, so I'm hoping it's just not
put back in right, and not something worse. I've only been able to take the
boat out once since we've bought it because my friend had to check it out,
and said the impeller needed to be changed. Is it possible to mess up the
transmission from changing the impeller? Anyone have any ideas?

you need a new friend! That said get a manual and see what's not done
correctly with the repair.

You need to take the lower down - and put it back up with the lower unit and
shifter both in neutral.
