Cranes onboard ship -- note for scale that this is a 788 foot long ship. The accident related happened during the ship turning around in the river. It struck a dredge that had anchored outside of the channel. What's the current there, and was it ebbing, flooding, or slack during the turn? What's that idiot doing in that pleasure boat in the first photo? He's much closer than he should be. |

He's much closer than he should be. Wow! Somebody is reading rec.boats! I just checked my email after a few days away from the computer and had a note from Susan Clizbe, the Communications Manager at North Carolina State Ports Authority. She states, in part: "The "idiot in the pleasure boat" was indeed the media boat we chartered, skippered by a very experienced owner with assistance from the youngest unlimited-tonnage captain licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard. They were in direct and constant communication with the Coast Guard, being very careful to stay behind the ship and out of the way at all times." Here's a bit more info: http://tinyurl.com/354fr6 Susan Clizbe continues with further information: "In answer to the later question about the Plimsoll line, see this schematic. The ship was ballasted down to minimal freeboard only a few miles downriver, in order to clear the Progress Energy lines that cross just south of the port. It looked a little funny to see the ZPMC logo half submerged, but that was normal. The ship is submersible, although of course that's normally while it's stopped. The crane booms were also lowered from the full boom-up position (which makes them 345 feet tall from the ground, or deck of the ship in this instance) to make the power-line clearance. Because of the power lines, our cranes were packed down between their legs with the booms up, instead of being shipped fully erected and boomed down as is usually done. With the booms down, they are 480 feet wide. In any event, that poster was absolutely correct: everything about the trip around the world was indeed very carefully calculated long in advance. If you didn't see the crane arrival page, it's pretty interesting too, including both schematics and a photo of the ship at anchor off Southport waiting for the weather to improve (notice the freeboard as indicated by ZPMC on the side of the ship). And I'm particularly proud of the tracking map, where we followed her all the way around, There's also a photo of the cranes leaving Shanghai, along with the two that were dropped off in Jamaica before they arrived here - notice that they are fully erected, and also note the abundant freeboard. This would have been a great episode of "Mega Movers" on Discovery. Interesting that they found the post. And really great information - very cool. |
