Rudolph Diesel designed his engine to run on vegetable oil, with peanut oil and cottonseed oil considered prime candidates. At the very, very, beginning it was all about bio-diesel. Not that coal dust might not have been used at some point, but I wonder how a dust could be injected into a cylinder of compressed air? A liquid seems more ideally matched to the technical requirement. Sadly, I suspect that pleasure boating will involve more sailing in future generations. Not that sailing isn't a fine activity- it's only sad from the standpoint that a choice will be restricted or eliminated. |
