Of course, the laws of supply and demand tell us that this seizure will cause the street value of cocaine to rise, which of course encourages traffickers to take even greater risks to bring it in, and results in more increased crime as users attempt to support their even more expensive habits. The inflated street value also leads to more violent turf battles over dealing territory on the streets. This is an observation, not an answer, and I certainly don't want to take anything away from the hard work that the Coast Guard put in to make such a large bust. It just seems like the war on drugs is like running on a treadmill- no matter how hard you run, you never really get ahead. Michael |

I'd say that the high incidence of drunk driving accidents and associated mayhem and deaths, in addition to the health problems associated with alcohol are pretty violent, wouldn't you? But cocaine seems to do in 6 months what excess alcohol takes 20 years to accomplish. Some drugs need to be outlawed or at least controlled. Others, such as pot, should be a free choice item. You can smoke it on private property, but not on public property. That way, anybody affected is there by choice. Would reduce the prison population a bunch, taxed, would add lots of revenue to the state, and reduce the amount of law enforcement manpower and money spend on the war on drugs. A war we have definitely lost. |

I'd say that the high incidence of drunk driving accidents and associated mayhem and deaths, in addition to the health problems associated with alcohol are pretty violent, wouldn't you? So you endorse reinstatement of the 18th Amendment? In a way I do, yes. Doing the same thing twice with the expectation of a different result is a prognosis for insanity. For instance, I would like to see life imprisonment for anybody convicted of driving drunk (or impaired by other means/drugs) where a life is lost. "Driving drunk" != "manufacture, transport and sale of alcohol". I could go on, but I won't. Of course, because nothing you wrote is relevant to the discussion of the legality of the manufacture, transport, sale or consumption of any particular substance. I said in a way. You restrict manufacture, transport, sales and consumption in the fashion of expectations - I expect the use of it to be controlled by modifying behaviors in the form of severe restrictions if the substance is abused. We can compartmentalize until we're blue in the face by isolating the production, marketing and sales of any substance from the abuse of same, but the simple fact is that they are inexorably linked - supply and demand. The only way to alter that equation is to remove one - which to me, would be the disciplinary actions to curtail use and abuse rather than prohibit the production and sales. If you can't sell it, you can't continue to make it. To me, severe penalties for abuse would accomplish that. |

Nope. I will forgive you for leaving out the fact that I was replying to the male prostitute when he asked "Who cares if someone is hurting themselves?". But whatever you want to think is fine with me Doug. I hope you and Fred have fun playing in the mud together. |

Booze is legal, and assuming I didn't drive while drinking, I could drink myself into a coffin without hurting anyone else (physically). My brother in law did exactly that. I could also blind myself by using a bench grinder without safety goggles, or make myself deaf by playing in my band without hearing protection. Should power tools and drums be illegal? |
