So I could not even get Microsoft Money to install on my vista machine

Just some observations.
We non-technogeeks are pretty spoiled. We just expect stuff to work
without requiring the operator to stand on one foot, light a red
candle, and chant.
The availability of complex work-arounds for the more bizarre
characteristics of VISTA still doesn't make the system as functional
as the XP it is supposed to replace.
Aside from the fact that some of the most popular nav software isn't
compatible with VISTA, (at least not yet), there is some basis for an
impression that MS rushed this product to market without first ironing
out all of the bugs. At least with Dell offering the XP machines once
again, boaters ready to replace a navigation computer have an option
to get proven, reliable technology.

I know quite a bit about the impression that VISTA is making on the
general, computer consuming public. I are one. :-)

Like I said, most of us just expect stuff to work without having to
select "compatability" choices, unload other installed on the same
computer, etc.

Making a new file is NOT a bizarre workaround.

No contemporary OS with which I am familiar has "all" its bugs ironed.


Making a new file is a bizarre work around. When I supplied end user
software I was expected to install and load without any extra required from
the operator other than agree to the terms and what directory to install in
or to change the directory if they wanted. If DEC or IBM brought out a new
OS, the old program installed and ran. It is not that hard to allow dynamic
link libs to work with a new OS. And that is all a driver is.
