Friday the 13th. Boating superstitions?
Anybody willing to admit to observing any particular superstitions
when boating? You hear all sort of things, from "no bananas allowed aboard", to no whistling allowed, etc. I'm not personally sure I observe any boating superstitions, although there is a fine line between a practical precaution and a superstition. Maybe some of my behavior is superstitious and I don't realize it. BTW, one reason Friday the 13th is considered an "unlucky" day is that it was Friday, October 13, when the King of France ordered the Knights Templar killed and/or arrested to be killed later. (Lesson to be learned, don't be richer than the king when he's trying to wage an expensive war). |

Major car crash in Missisippi while stopped, reckless driver smashed the car. My dad passed away on a Friday the 13. So, not one of the favorite days. |

So you see this as better than an OT post about Vonage? |

You'd need to be an active boater to appreciate the number of superstitions that some people observe. There are some very old traditions that survive into the present age. If you can't relate, that's entirely OK. One of these days I'll get into the actual spirit of the NG and post about buying a lawn mower, pumping a septic tank, etc, Jim. :-) |

Maybe then you will show that you actually lead a normal life and not one involving boating 24x7. Take some time this weekend to relax Chuck and perhaps take some time away for your boat. I bet your wife would appreciate a nice dinner out without the conversation revolving around your boat. ;-) |

I figure that if my feet are already wet, they won't get any wetter. I also like to spit into the wind when I go boating - it's easier than taking my glasses off and licking them for anti-fog purposes. I like to stick myself with a 6/0 hook figuring that anything smaller than that won't hurt as much and might possibly prevent another hook accident. When having a bad day with no hookups on fish, I will also pee into the water as the ancient Amerindian shaman did. According to legend, this was annointing the waters bringingt good luck. I figure that the fish just don't like to be ****ed on. I will always create a rat's nest on the casting reel I will be using that day. Normally takes me fifteen minutes to fix, however that fifteen minutes is well spent because it won't happen the rest of the trip. I will always break at least one leader to prevent another from being broken. I have a special pole that I will step on to prevent stepping on any of my good poles. I always fish on days starting with S, M, T, W and F. I never fish on any day ending in z. I never fish on the 32nd day of the month. I never fish on the 357th day of the year. I never fish during the 13th month of the year. So, anybody else want to contribute? |
