Default Fish finder for wooden boat?

I've got a 24' wooden cutter with a diesel inboard engine. I would
like to fit a fish-finder but do not not want to cut a hole through
the wooden hull for the transducer. The only alternative appears to
be to mount a transducer on the transom, but I understand that that
this will give very poor reception with the prop being under the boat.

Has anyone else come across this dilema and does anyone have a
solution?

Thanks

Lol
