Being a smart ass to a cop/inspector is never a good idea.....you always
come out on the losing end. Always.

Some cops forget to tread a careful balance between enforcing the law and
being an asshole. Complaining up the chain of command often gets them
reassigned (to a desk) or at least gets them a 'talking to' that adjusts
their future behavior. As someone else posted, sometimes they don't know
they're being a prick.

Look at what we ask them to do, handle the garbage of society every day
(more applicable to street cops of course). The fact they end up stinking
from it gives them a little leeway. But not much.

Complain to the supervisors, at the direct level and again at one level up.
Being a smart-ass or complaining to them directly often only ends up in you
getting hassled more. Smile, take it and then slash and burn your way up
the chain of command later. Nothing gets action from superiors like having
their time spent dealing with complaints from citizens because of a stupid
underling. Let the chain of command rain on the idiot's parade, not you
directly.
