The fuel pump should only be working when the engine is cranking to *start*, OR there is oil pressure. When you're cranking the engine to start it, there is no oil pressure, but you need fuel. Once it's started, AND you have oil pressure, the fuel pump works as well. The scenario you want to avoid is a running engine, being fed fuel, with NO oil pressure. James' advice is dead on.
