As best as I can calculate the closest point to Miami is North Bimini
in
the Bahamas...which is approx 51 miles distance.-

OK, but what is the origin of the name "Bimini"? Was it named after the
boat
tops, or is it the other way around? And, what's a "Scotia"?

The island was named after the top. And "Scotia" is a bank.
