Well, interesting week...

Not a cigar - believe it or not, the power supply must have had
a thermal runaway or something similar.

It was more messy than dangerous, but the office filled up with
smoke - needed a new desk, had to have everything cleaned,
etc.

Interesting experience.

That sucks. Laptop or tower?
I leave my laptop on 24/7 and have often thought that maybe that's not a
good idea.

Glad it wasn't more serious.

Eisboch

I was thinking the same thing. We have 5 computers in the house running
24/7, including one laptop. The power cord on my old Dell laptop was
recalled and replaced because of several cases of them overheating and
catching fire.

So how's everything been? *:)

Miss me?

You missed the new guy or gal in the group. He or she popped in when
you popped out. He or she is a real trip; launches a personal attack
troll of a thread and then presumes to bitch about the quality of
content in rec.boats! If you hadn't already gone down prior to this
party's appearance, perhaps your CPU received his or her message,
suffered acid damage to critical insulation, and went up in smoke. :-)

Good luck with the rebuild/new build and welcome back.

Yeah - I saw that.

While not a confession, I am sort-of to blame for that.

Combat Bunny is an old friend/dueler of mine - believe it or not, he's
a
Renaissance man - a real life Jubal Harshaw only with more degrees.
Very
prolilfic author and in real life, very kind and generous with his
time and
knowledge. Does a lot of charity work and pro-bono legal filings for
folks
who can't afford attorneys. He and I first tangled on rec.art.sf
years ago
and eventually it came to a detente' and grew into a friendship. We
go
fishing or have lunch every he rolls into town to visit his elderly
parents.

As it happened we were discussing the state of Usenet in general. I
was
lamenting the lack of quality flames and we started remembering the
old
days and some of the great flame wars and warriors. I mentioned this
newsgroup as being somewhat provincial in that respect (which I have
mentioned in the past) and wouldn't it be fun to set up a false war in
which we could pick on each other.

So not knowing that I was offline, he did it on his own waiting for me
to jump in and really get cranking - it was supposed to be a fun thing
for both of us. Unfortunately, it back fired.

He will appear to apologise under his actual name as soon as he
returns home tomorrow.

If you wish to place blame, blame me.

Blame is lame, but if you insist...

Glad to hear the damage wasn't more serious. Was there enough heat
outside the actual chasis of the PC to have caused ignition? If so,
scary stuff.

I had an incident here two weeks ago with a 220 volt outlet for the
hot water heater. We woke up one morning without hot water, and when
I investigated, discovered there was no voltage at the heater.
Tracing backward to the plug and outlet outlet, one of the prongs had
formed enough corrosion to create a high resistance conection, which
in turn developed enough heat to burn away half of the outlet shell,
and melt off 3 inches of insulation on the distribution wire. No
external signs of heat or damage at all.

ROFLOL! The way this guy just showed up and started popping off to anyone he
could, seemed strange. Now it makes sense, and is actually kind of funny.

You need to cut back on those hot chats.

Hot chats?

Not likely. :)

Well, don't give up hope, man!

What are you building? I'm in the process myself. My mother-in-law's
computer died so I'm sending her the desktop system I built last year.

AMD Athlon X2 64 5800, 4 gig memory, terrabyte SATA storage, Geforce
8800 GTX (768 mb), Soundblaster X-FI Elite Pro, Firewire, network
adaptor,
yada, yada, yada...

I'm not screwing around this time. :)

That sucks! Some here will blame it on bad karma. ;-)

Was it the power supply catching fire?

I guess - that's what the Fire Marshall said. Kind of a thermal
runaway.

How old was it?

Three years.
