There are knowledgeable and
published posters that read rec.boats and associated newsgroups that stopped, on advice from their attorneys, posting to other web based forums that had similar TOS. Really? Cite examples. |

Want to start with Peggie Hall?Peggie Hall continues to use and post advice to other boating NG's, including non moderated UseNet forums. * * When Peggie left rec.boats. she was very adamant why she stopped posting in rec.boats. *She was tired of the personal inflammatory attacks by one of more (at the time, the most) prolific regulars in rec.boats. I had lunch with Peggie maybe a year and a half ago, and that is essentially what she told me. When the subject of rec.boats came up (very briefly) she referred to it as "(so-and-so's) group", and remarked that she was not going to post here again. To be fair, I think there were additional reasons as well. In addition to "so-and-so" and the negative atmosphere created by non-stop political cut and pastes, wars of the eternal flame, etc, she was regularly getting scorched by another poster. That person is seldom seen here these days but he or she had a highly refined ability to make extremely acidic remarks. The personal, inflammatory attacks, and the off topic political bickering that was the norm in rec.boats for so many years is reason why most of the professionals left rec.boats. And why it is important to discourage that type of behavior when we can. The rec.boats NG should attract boaters, there are plenty of other NG's where political BS is appropriate. |

I rememebr that. it was most unfortunate, and totally uncalled for. Peggy has a wealth fo information, and from the times I've written to her, on other places, she was most friendly and had great advice. And why it is important to discourage that type of behavior when we can. The rec.boats NG should attract boaters, there are plenty of other NG's where political BS is appropriate. agreed. |

Unfortunately, rec.boats does not have a charter. So really, there is no such thing as an off topic post in rec.boats. Anything goes. Now, your ISP probably (most do) have a TOS that spells out a lot of things you can't do. You should check your individual ISP's TOS. Steve |

How do you enforce acceptable and not acceptable for USENET charters that were written and approved, by vote of the UUNet/Internet masses 20 years ago. Do you remember the Richard Depew(sp?) incident of the early 90's? Now, your ISP probably (most do) have a TOS that spells out a lot of things you can't do. You should check your individual ISP's TOS. Only if you are threatening someone. If you are just being an asshole then they won't do anything. |

I bet 'cha can't guess who uses cancelbots currently (without looking it up that is). You are correct, I have no idea who is using cancelbots today. I just remember that I was involved in tiff with The Dick about his actions. He said that he had been appointed/approved as a net cop by somebody I can't remember. I asked to see his badge and he said he didn't have one. |

The Church of Scientology. They use something called Cancelbunny. That makes sense due to the fact that their religious texts are copyrighted. I have never understood the purchasing of salvation or enlightenment. I just remember that I was involved in tiff with The Dick about his actions. Usenet was much more interesting in those days. :) The vote No wars to prevent new groups from being created. Hooking up to a UUCP site via a 1200 bps modem. Telling people there wasn't enough space on the news server for the group to have more than 1 days worth of messages. That was back when UNIX admins were Kings. |
