If you had done your sworn duty...I bet there'd be a lot less of "the
name-calling and trash-mouthing you'd prefer".
In fact I much prefer a nice homey, down-east style of group where all are
considered equal and we can chat like buddies over a cold draught beer.

Herring apparently is oblivious to the fact that his role here as "Ms
Manners" puts him high up on the list of the obnoxious. You'd think that
as a non-boater, he'd move along.

Spouting your fallacies again, Harry? Try Don's approach - chatting like
buddies. It may work. You won't need to continuously call names!

Don,
Nice to see you would prefer a nice homey group, instead of viewing your
mission in the NG as having to turn over the rocks to expose the slime
of the NG. Would you like a nice IPA?

Sometimes a minor point makes a major difference. Please reread. My
reference was to people who don't ordinarily participate in the NG but
who seem to show up to participate in threads that are racist in nature
or feature other subjects more often associated with right wing
extremism. Therefore the comment was not directed to anybody normally
part of the "group" here.

Not that there aren't left wing extremist OT threads as well- but it
seems that our homegrown lefties run for most of the yardage there.
Darn few people we have never heard of before follow the left wing
extremists into the group. By way of example, there were 4-6 people in
that absurd "Gould is a Jew!" thread (as if that would be an insult
even if it were true) a few months back that had never appeared in
rec.boats or hadn't been heard from for months and months prior and
haven't been heard from since.

I think many conservatives are fine people who have thoughtfully
evaluated the issues and simply reached some different conclusions than
I have. We'll need to wait for history to show who's right, and by then
we'll all be dead anyway and it won't matter much. Of course, history
will ultimately prove the conservatives right on some issues and
liberals right on others.

It's true that I can be an insensitive *******, but I'm not out to
tarnish conservatism.

Remember when it got so bad here that I installed a news server and
offered free use of same for all those interested in "boating only"
posts? It deleted far left and far right content in the hope that
there were some posters left that still owned a boat.....

We've always tolerated "off topic" content here until it got just mean
and nasty....

Now.... can we get back to water related stuff?

Sounds good to me. Now, who's got the recipe for the chowdah mentioned in
Harry's thread?

Well if you want the Scottish variety, google for: cullen skink recipe
I'm afraid that unless my mother is making it from scratch, I get it
from the supermarket.

On the boat related side of things, I just got a letter from the marina.
Annual lock maintenance closure extended due to adverse weather . . .

Speaking of weather, you guys seem to be catching some real crap according

Thank you for asking, John.

All seems to be well, though a relative was working in a health centre
near where the child was crushed by the falling wall in north London.
As the staff know the family well, eveyone was rather upset. I am not
going to say any more out of respect for their confidentiality other
than to say they are in our thoughts.

On a lighter note, I haven't recived any nastygrams from the Marina and
this webcam loking out over the Thames estuary in the general area looks
fairly calm at the moment:

http://www.iossc.org.uk/weather/

so all should be OK with the yacht. I am down there tomorrow to do
maintenance. I'm mighty glad I picked up the permanent shore lines from
our previous marina just after Christmas and put them on a fortnight
back. They are extremely heavy three strand with spliced eyes and well
covered with reinforced plastic hoze to prevent chafe. We were
thinking about hauling out for the winter but I think in view of the
number of yachts which have been toppled this year, even though we've
moved to a less exposed marina, we'll stay in apart from a brief haulout
for essentials like antifouling and anodes.

Got a work party on down my local sailing club on Sunday, I wonder what
chaos We'll find in the dinghy park. :-(
