Rain - On Lake Hartwell ??

Carlyle is a semi man-made lake, that is fed by the Kaskaskia river that was dammed up in the early 50's., and the lake is shallow in some places, but not bad, that is IF you know where to go. Basicly though, it's either full, or fuller. I have been on Carlyle, but it has been about 30 years. You are right about it being shallow in spots. I really don't know it that well. The lake we went to most when I was growing up was Lake of the Ozarks and Tablerock. My mom still has a place at the 26 mile marker on Lake of the Ozarks, or about there if my memory recalls correctly. The place has a Sunrise Beach mailing address. When I get back to St.Louis we run a boat of my uncle's on the Mississippi. That can be a lot of fun. Capt Jack R.. It's been down for over two years as they reinforced the dam. I was out last Saturday, and we've got our lake back! |

Capt Jack R.. jack, that's one thing I'd like to do this summer, is go in a river cruise on the MS. But I dont' know a thing about it, except for what I see going over the bridge from IL into MO. on I-70. I would like to plan it out for this summer, though. You know where I can get info to do such? Th Illinois river is easy, no problem there, been up and down it many times from Havana, to Alton and back, |

I like lake Murray, We use to live in Lexington and used that marina by the dam to launch from. It was great because it was so close to the house. We were there when they droped the lake to kill the hydrilla that was choking the shallows, did that work out ? Capt Jack R.. Nope. They finally introduced sterile Grass Carp to the lake a couple of years ago. That, coupled with the low levels forced by dam repair, has knocked it back. We'll see how much is left out there this summer when it is usually at its worst. Jake's Landing is the marina by the dam. It's closest to our house, and is where we keep our boat. |

You mean the state ramp on the West Columbia/Irmo side of the Dam? I took him to mean the marina on the Lexington side of the dam... Jake's. That's my home base. I there visiting my son who lives in Lexington County (West Columbia) and I took a ride up to Lake Murray - I was amazed at the difference between last August and now - totally different lake than it was last summer. No doubt about it. It's just over 2 feet away from full pool. That's as high as they ever let it get. Fortunately it's a pretty deep lake, so if you had water to get your boat in, you could use the lake even when it was down. There were a lot of lake property owners who had no water for a long time, though. |

When I get a chance I will ask him for any tips he may have. When we go out it is just for a few hours. And it had been several years. He will run pretty far with his wife getting lodging on some points on the river. But honestly I can't recall where he says he going when they go out for a few days. I will try to remember to ask him about running the river and where he goes. Plus any advice he may offer. His boat is a 23 ft Slickcraft I beleive. He has had it for about 20 years on the river. No this was not the public ramp (we once meet a guide there to take us out) The ramp we used was in a small marina on the Lexington side. For the life of me I can't recall what it was called. The Drive to it was about four miles from the dam or somthing like that(past that little store). They have a duel ramp setup with one finger peer on one side. We lived off Old Cherokee and the little marina was closer to the house. I think they charged me 3 bucks for every drop and pull out of there. It could get pretty tight when it was busy. When one went out on the lake from there you would pop out of a cove about half way between Bomb/Dolittle Island and the Dam. We would run to the far end to the point where it was starting to look like a river again and head back on some outings. Capt Jack R.. |

They offered me a position in SC after I finished my degree and was working in Calif for NCR. Decided I liked CA better and changed jobs. Would have taken a job at Rancho Bernardo. |

We liked the west end of the lake, so we kept the boat at Southshore Marina on Hwy 378, down at the double bridges going toward the traffic circle. Now we live in the Corley Mill Rd. area, so Jake's is closer. And I work with a bunch of ex-NCR people. We hired them as our business expanded over the last few years, and they were looking for work. |
