Safety and common sense never take a holiday
Office of Public Affairs
U.S. Coast Guard Thirteenth District Press Release Date: December 24, 2006 Contact: USCG Public Affairs (206) 220-7237 NEWPORT SHIP'S MASTER ARRESTED FOR BUI SEATTLE - People partying aboard the fishing vessel Starrigavin received an unwelcome surprise when they were greeted by Coast Guard and Oregon State Patrol officials Saturday as they returned to Newport, Ore. Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay received a call at 7:45 p.m. that people were drinking aboard the 58-foot fishing vessel Starrigavin. Station Yaquina Bay contacted Oregon State Patrol who joined two Coast Guard members at the Pacific Shrimp pier in Newport. Police officials administered a field sobriety test to the ship's master upon arrival of the vessel. The 23-year-old male registered .13 for alcohol content and was taken into custody. A subsequent boarding by Coast Guard members uncovered several safety violations for which the ship's master was cited. Boating and alcohol is a deadly mix. Alcohol is involved in approximately 30 percent of boating fatalities in Oregon each year, 50-70 percent nationwide. A drug or alcohol boat operator who is arrested for Boating Under the Influence of Intoxicants faces the following: could face fines of up to $6,250 and up to one year in jail must complete a boating safety class lose his or her boat operation privileges for a period of time have boat registrations suspended for up to three years ### View this document online U.S. Coast Guard - 13th District 13th District Public Information Site Visit this link to unsubscribe: http://www.piersystem.com/go/unsubscribe/21/ |

Hope they keep it up. I'm also glad to hear they responded to another party's complaint. Haven't heard of that before. -- John H *Have a great Christmas and a spectacular New Year!* |
