Am I being paranoid if I fear that one of the harder to get components of a
suitcase bomb is detected on airplanes traveling from Russia to England. Suitcase bomb would use plutonium and that needs U238 under the lead shield as a neutron reflector as well as Polonium 110 and Beryllium dust injected into the critical mass of plutonium (34 pounds) to achieve detonation. Lead and Beryllium are easy to get, the harder to get items like U238 and Plutonium are dangerous but not as dangerous as Polonium 110 and Polonium is an Isotope that has a shorter life than that of U238 or Plutonium. An old (taken out of service) nuclear weapon would require the electronics, the shaped charges and the Polonium replaced to insure detonation. As to the political aspects of using Polonium 110 as a poison, the only countries that make it are France, Russia, India, Pakistan, China and the US. |

Sometime in the next few days, I expect to see congressional blowhards talking about how we'll be checking all passengers for radioactive whatever. |

If you think you're paranoid you probably are. On a technical note; I once owned a Fountain with highly-modified 30 hp Evinrude that used Polonium 110 and methane as fuel. The Polonium was delivered to the dock in a suitcase and the methane was derived from BS. I was able to use a flux capacitor as a neutron reflector thereby saving the weight of a lead shield. |

Tom, you've got too much time on your hands. Get that trawler you've been dreaming of and head south. The Bahamas are really nice this time of year, as are the FL Keys and hereabouts. |

Sadly, I would, but unfortunately Mrs. Wave is having too much fun at this stage of her career so retirement is many years away yet. Sorry to hear that, just planning the trip is good therapy. I updated all of my electronic charts today for the 2007 tide and current data. Hopefully we'll be going north again next summer. Speaking of which, if you haven't already done so, you should download some of those free NOAA charts to your PC and get a nav program to display them. Then you can do some serious trip planning. I have all of the tracks saved from our recent cruises right here on my desktop and can replay them at anytime. It's amazing how it brings back detailed memories of the trip and all of the harbors as you follow along on the chart. |

I use Maptech's Offshore Navigator because I acquired it years ago at a very reasonable price and already had some experience with it from a friends boat. http://maptech.com/water/index.cfm Fugawi has a good reputation also and I believe a demo version can be downloaded for a free trial: http://www.fugawi.com/web/products/f..._navigator.htm The charts are free from NOAA, such a deal: http://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/mcd/Raster/download.htm |
