Here's a new....um....workout routine for you. http://tinyurl.com/u2323 Let me go on record... for all those that read this NG .... Never saw or heard of one of those things. Of course you haven't. Nope - not you. Uh - uh - never entered my mind. ~~ snerk ~~ It's been a long, long time since I got into any kind of exercise routine, but it's starting to work. I go down into the exercise room at about 6:30 am everyday and start off doing the treadmill thing. I am up to a little over 2.6 miles on it ... do the first mile at 3.8-4.0 mph at a 2.5 degree incline. (the incline is a killer) At one mile, I keep the pace the same but drop the incline by half. At two miles I drop the incline to zero .... then, over about an 8 minute period, slowly drop the speed down to a leisurely walk to cool down. I have a TV mounted on the wall in the gym, so I watch Imus in the Morning during this 40 minute ritual, ( or Bonanza reruns on weekends) otherwise I'd be bored stiff. Not too bad .... big improvement from day one when I went half a mile and thought I would die. Then I move over to the weight machines. Do a bunch of sit-ups on the bench press seat, then do about 40-50 bench presses with just the bar .... no weights yet. The bar by itself is 25 lbs and after 40 presses, the old arms start to complain. Then over to the curl machine and do about 30 with 25lbs. Doesn't sound like much, but the arms can feel it. Then ... over to some kind of machine where you sit on a seat and pull a bar (attached to weights via pulleys) down in front of you, then up, then down behind your head, then repeat. About 30 of those with 70 lbs of weight. By this time I am huffing, puffing and sweating bullets. Finally ... over to the leg lift machine and do about 20 lifts with about 40 lbs. Another killer. There's one more machine down there ... you lay on your belly and do weighted curls with your legs, but I skip this one, for now anyway. So ... after 5 and a half weeks, I've dropped 17 lbs and am starting to feel a heck of a lot better. I am watching what I eat as well .... if fact I've probably over done that. Doc says a pound a week weight loss is ideal, so I may increase the calorie intake a bit. Starting to get into it now .... I feel guilty if I don't get down there on time or do anything less than I did the day before. Eisboch |

(over & above walking the dog & doing chores assigned by wife) My Pacemaster treadmill has different programs built in. I was up to 40 minutes and my max speed was around 4 mph. Anything over that forced me into a half trot. The thing was like an elevator, going up & down at certain intervals... sometimes at least a 4 degree incline. I also have a Bowflex Ultimate exercise machine that I would use for about 45 minutes. |

How do you like the Bowflex machine? I've been eyeballing them. The equipment I have is excellent stuff ... commercial Gold's Gym type, but I think it's all outdated. Five machines, but each has a specific purpose, unlike the Bowflex that does many things. Eisboch |

Eisboch For 'old guys' like us, especially if space is a consideration, great. On the other hand, the $5K CDN I spent on equipment would have bought me about 10 years membership in a local gym.. a 10 minute walk south. When young I loved free weights... at the local YMCA I reached my personal best with a 325 bench press with an Olympic barbell. A gang of regulars went and it was a social thing as much as exercise. On Saturday mornings we always went to a close by tavern for quarts of beer after a workout. Anyway..those days are gone .. so a regular program of leg, chest, shoulder & arm exercises makes me feel much better & sures firms me up. The Bowflex is effective, quiet and ok to use once you get used to the different feel. I always thought they were overpriced for something Made in China. |

On the other hand, the $5K CDN I spent on equipment would have bought me about 10 years membership in a local gym.. a 10 minute walk south. I've never been interested in this kind of exercise, although I need it. When working I joined a gym a couple of times but rarely went. You have to make it a daily thing, I think. Our house was briefly owned by a former pro hockey player (so he said - I had never heard of him) who bought it about half-way through construction and did some redesigning. Part of the basement was finished as a 1200 sq.ft gym, complete with a sauna room, commercial weight sets, treadmill and even full length wall mirrors so you can admire yourself while working out. He didn't live here long and when we bought the house all the equipment went with the deal. Since then, we added a spa, as well. In the six years we've owned it, I've used the sauna once (just to see if it worked) and occasionally we use the spa during the winter if I am not too lazy to get it running. The exercise stuff just sat there. So, finally it is getting some use. Eisboch |
