I'm actually almost a inch and a half shorter than I was at age 20. It is one of the oldest newsgroups on Usenet (along with alt.sailing.asa) and is unique in the respect that it has no charter. It's more of a free for all. One of it's best attributes in the past has been humor and although I don't always agree with Harry on some subjects, I've always found a light side in many of his posts. Personally, I enjoy the boating topics but, as I've got to know some of the virtual personalities of some of the participants, I've also enjoyed many of the off topic discussions and debates. Everything can be done to an excess of course and when it does it becomes obvious. Filters work well if some topics or those that indulge in personal attacks get to be too much for anyone. Some people here are masters at purposely raising the ire of others (trolls) and frankly, I consider you one of them at times when you do this. Prove me wrong and chill out. Post what you want and expect both praise and criticism. Stop worrying about everybody else and their behavior and methods. We can deal with it ourselves. Eisboch Let me see if I follow all of your points he It's a very good thing for the boating newsgroup to function as a chat room for the "virtual personalities" and you enjoy all of the OT discussions. Politically hot spuds are fine, at least for the first couple of exchanges before the personal remarks and name calling begin in earnest. In fact, you think posting just about anything here is OK and that everybody should be able to express an opinion, (as long as that opinion doesn't pertain to whether or not the OT political stuff and personal conversations are an asset to the newsgroup). You conclude your several paragraphs of personal preferences and opinions about what you think it is appropriate for me to post with an appeal to me to keep my personal preferences and opinions to myself. There's only a couple of people left here, you among them, that I like and find interesting. The netcops have turned this newsgroup into a pile of steaming dung, suitable mostly for their overwrought and uncritical advertorials. Last we heard, the YoHo was being offered for sale. Assuming you found a buyer, that leaves you with "half a canoe" and some other assorted paddle boats (IIRC). Maybe you're posting less because you're fairly well out of boating these days? Should the NG emphasis ever shift back to personal attack, overwrought and uncritical political cut 'n paste, and unsubstantiated claims of personal wealth, prestige, and accomplishment- the crowd that such a change might generate will probably bring in a few people you will like and find interesting. So hang in there, Harry- there's hope for a return to the nasty old days you so enjoyed here and an accelerating trend among the majority to go there. Meanwhile, as long as you have introduced the thought that we should be critical of the quality of posts to the NG, I'm still looking for some evidence that your lobster boat exists outside of your imagination. Wait! I know just where to turn to find it: rec.boast Rec.boats is an unusual newsgroup. Point is ... your constant scolding, lectures and passing of judgment about how *you* think others should behave are just as annoying as an over done political post IMO. Some people here are masters at purposely raising the ire of others (trolls) and frankly, I consider you one of them at times when you do this. Prove me wrong and chill out. Most of the participants here can't separate opinion from personality, and that's probably understandable. After all, few of us have ever met and we wouldn't recognize one another on the street. Those who are eager to judge one another have very little except opinion to work with. To nobody's surprise, each of us considers the "better" people to be those who agree with us most often. Maybe it is time for you to post another glowing advertorial of a Bayliner product to pay off that company for advertising in your boating magazine? I can't imagine why you'd care one way or the other. I've copied articles on a few US Marine products, maybe a half dozen in the last 3 years, into the NG and every time I have done so 2-3 people (typically you and Karen of Oz when it's offseason down under) give me grief about it and 2-3 people say "keep it up." Surely you don't think that the handful of people hanging out in rec.boats, of whom a significant portion are not active boaters, represent any commercial value to anybody. The only "payoff" for advertising in the publication I'm associated with is the response to the ads that appear there. There's no possible way that my random comments and opinions about the value of keeping the NG on topic could upset you and Eisboch and a few others so badly. Has to be something else at work here. (Conscience?) Anyway, I thank you for expressing your opinion. As you and others have pointed out rather indignantly, exchange of opinion is what the NG is supposed to be about. If some of us want to consider others to be "assholes" based upon the nature or character of the opinions expressed, I guess that comes with the territory. |

Ok, so what do you consider a good cup of mass produced and marketed coffee? By the way, one of the best cups of coffee I've ever had was at Bien Hoa AFB in Bien Hoa, SVN. We were there supporting the APE battalion during the first Tet Offensive and while assembling in a hanger, I grabbed a cup from a AF Master Sgt who was handing them out. Took a sip, said "damn Sarge, that's good". He says - "We clean the pots on a regular basis - with diesel fuel". I didn't drink anymore of it, but what I did drink was pretty damn good. :) The Special Forces guys at Bien Hoa had pretty good coffee also. They put on a fine breakfast in that club of theirs. I'm not a coffee aficionado. I've enjoyed any of the bolder Starbucks varieties, but I'd never go pay $20 a pound or more for coffee. |

Harry, you have always impressed me as being a reasonably articulate guy and a good communicator. Why do you have such a difficult time expressing a difference of opinion without stooping to name calling, character assassination, mud slinging, etc. In my opinion it reflects poorly on you and takes away from the credibility of your discussion. It is possible to disagree without being disagreeable. Just my 2 cents worth. |
