@news02.roc.ny:

How's the software? Any problems that make you think "sumbitch I wish I
hadn't installed this piece of crap"?

File sharing....yecch!

You, obviously, know how to use part of Usenet. Why not download from
Usenet's alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.(your favorite genre here) for free?

Oh, I know....You feel guilty playin' music and not payin' the
billionaires. Sorry...............

No binary support via my ISP, not about to pay another service when there's
no guarantee I'll find the music I need.

From what I gathered, they were focusing on Russian billionaires who
probably bootlegged the music from Usenet!

Don't make light of too many Russians. The finest MP3 catalog program on
the planet is:
MP3 Catalog Pro
from www.wizetech.com
for $US30.

In a very large collection, it can search through its all-RAM-based
catalog and show your honey all the songs by Travis Tritt in about a
hundred milliseconds, not grinding through disk files for 30 minutes like
most programs that do the same thing. Simply drag and drop the songs she
wants straight out of the search window into Winamp's playlist where you
want to play it in order and you're now in business. When it creates or
updates its catalog, it dissects every MP3 file it finds, separates and
stores its ID tag, even the newest version ID tag information, and can
even create a unique filename.mp3, if you like from the information
stored....or the other way around.

It's written by some really smart Russians, you know, those guys who are
making money from the US Taxpayer's Space Station sending touristas up
with the groceries...for big bucks...(c;

If you have a Windows-based MP3 collection I highly recommend this
program so you can find what you want, so easily it's uncanny....

Napster sucks....You may quote me...(c;

Don't be so cheap. Go to www.usenetserver.com and buy 3 days of
unlimited downloads for $3 to try it out. Is that cheap enough? Then,
buy 3 months of unlimited downloads...really unlimited, 10 simultaneous
ports, 24/7, as fast as you gots bandwidth to support, for $39. Your ISP
may be a problem blocking port 119, but UNS has that covered, too,
because you can logon to their many OTHER ports to get around ISP
blocking.

Luckily, Knology Cable (thanks guys!) includes DIRECT FIBER ACCESS to the
Usenetserver beast in Atlanta. I'm 9 milliseconds from God's Main
Server...(c; This message is being typed into my 4th port. 3 others are
downloading like mad as I type.....

"Unused bandwidth is WASTED bandwidth".....right?

Best Buy has 25 DVD+R on a spindle this week for $5 a spindle. I already
cleaned out the store here....(c;

Someday the corporations and bureaucrats are going to turn all this off.
I'm already ready for that day, having more to listen to and watch than I
could in the rest of my lifetime. It will be a real shame if you're
not.... Internet is well on its way to being like TV...another
corporation billboard-in-your-living-room...they control.

Pity....I no longer even look at webpages because of it.

Hmm...Rochester...is WHEN-TV still on the air? That was the only TV
channel we could get at the lake house with a 60' antenna!

What's your news client you use to download binaries? Maybe I can ease
your pain....

I'm not being cheap. Rather, I often look for music that's quite obscure,
and I usually need it NOW, for various reasons. No time to post a request in
a newsgroup and hope someone lights up and offers the music 4 days later.

There are many problems with music downloaded via "binary" newsgroups, not
the least of which is... low-fi.

Were you able to buy what you needed from the Russkis?

No. See the email further below, received late yesterday. The so-called
"token" you mentioned may have really been related to the Xrost cash card
they mention in their message. Not sure about using that method, though. The
email also suggests using alltunes, but at first glance, that doesn't allow
me to buy individual songs.

Hello,
We're sorry, our payment system is not accepting credit card payments at the
moment.

At the moment you can add money to your balance on the site of our partner
allTunes.com. Please use this link http://alltunes.com/payment/refill.shtml

You may use your AllofMP3.com login and password.

You may also refill your Allofmp3 balance with credit card or even with
cash - via Xrost service.
Xrost sells online prepaid iCards that can be immediately redeemed at
Allofmp3.
Xrost iCards can be funded by trusted international pay systems which accept
both credit cards and cash (if you don't have a credit card or don't want to
use it online at all).
You will receive a bonus of 10% if you redeem Xrost iCards.

Best regards,
Allofmp3.com

That's for sure. I've tried a few and although I appreciate the efforts
..... they sound horrible.

Horse****. There isn't any difference between 44.1Kbps and 44.1Kbps.

For you audiofools, there are even FLAC newsgroups where uncompressing a
FLAC file gets you the same bits as was on the original disk, but you
can't tell the difference. Music is all sampled at 44.1Kbps. It's
already corrupted before it gets to the store. It has been all your
life, even in analog days. Music is made for R-A-D-I-O, which promotes
and sells it. The bandwidth of FM is STILL 50 to 15,000 Hz. The only
difference on the air is the 75 usec pre-emphasis/de-emphasis to reduce
FM hiss....Still.

What nonsense it is to think they care and spend extra money past
whatever the consumers will tolerate. After all, it's only 44.1K
samples, 3 times the highest frequency rate, but the electronics smooths
it to sound good.

Of course, these days, playing through those little tiny speakers they
sell for $600 at the audiofool stores, it sounds like crap no matter how
they make it. One woofer...how stupid.

He's getting music to play in a BOAT, through tiny speakers, not Carnegie
Hall on massive prosound speakers. It has no fidelity at all.

Same old Harry....trollin' for the kick.

I redeemed an "alltunes pin card" which I bought with my credit card.

I just tried alltunes and ordered a single "do-wop" from a a CD album of
26.

Sounds like you need a technical consult from a Russian speaker.

No - I need my phone to stop ringing. Can I interest you 1100 cases of V-8
Splash, any mix of flavors? Delivers right to your garage on 10/7. You'll
need to drink it really fast, or keep it from freezing.
