Boating the Hudson, South of GWB & Statue of Liberty - NEWBIE need advice/tips

Hey, I plan on taking my 21' Chaparral in the Hudson at Hazzard's Ramp on
Friday. I plan on going south toward the statue of liberty and also on the
East River past the triboro. I have heard some stories of Strong Current on
the east river near hells gate and rocks near the statue. Any truth to that?
Will my 21' Chaparral be OK?

I'm looking for some reassuring advice, mainly on the conditions. Any help
is appreciated.. I do have Charts of the area.

Also another day I plan on going to NY Harbor, any opinions on that?
Currents? Rocks?

Thanks!

-Matt

NY Harbor is an exciting place to go boating for a lot of reasons but
it is not particularly friendly to small boats. If you lose power or
steering you can get into considerable trouble in no time at all. You
will also find it a bit choppy for a 21 footer.

Make sure your boat is in good shape, have a working VHF radio and
know how to use it, carry an anchor with plenty of line, and and have
an up to date SeaTow membership.

my advice, as a former coast guard radio operator in NY harbor...

study your charts
know where the shallow areas are
know how your radio works
make sure your engine is in good condition
stay the living hell OUT of the shipping channels. the 'sandmaster'
moves fast and doesn't answer calls on channel 16 or 13...

When someone asks on the internet for the location of rocks in a
prospective boating area, I worry that maybe they don't have a chart.
Surely you have a chart, correct?
