I am just wondering why a 5 year old boat with less than 130 hours on it
needed a new engine.


I can think of one reason, based solely on personal experience. Cracked
block due to winter freeze. Been there.

Not to be anal about this, but how did the boat have 130 hours on it if the
original engine croaked after 5 hours?

second owner. Boat had 80 something hrs on when he bought it.

Point is....How's the Boat (power train), underpowered? does it plane
well? Any known problems with the boat? Does the arch blow off at 30
knots?
Any history here that me being a noob here would not be aware of? Yes,
we'll use the boat on freshwater for evenings and weekend pleasure.

That's what I was thinking.


In my case, the boat was only four years old and in excellent condition, and
warranted a proper repair. I called a number of shops in town to ask how
they would handle the repair. I got a lot of stupid answers like "we'll
just go down to the junkyard and pull a 350 out of a wrecked pickup truck".
I finally came across a shop that told me he would only do the job one way,
and that was to order a new crated 350 long block direct from MerCruiser, an
identical replacement. The only thing used from the old engine would be
externals, such as carb, alternator, water pump, fuel pump, distributor,
etc. I towed the boat to his shop the next day. Had it back in two weeks,
and it ran exactly the same as it did before the incident, which is to say,
perfect. That was six thousand 1992 insurance company (thankfully) dollars.
Turned out to be a very strong selling point when I sold the boat 6 months
later, since I was able to produce the repair invoice to potential buyers.

I have had a 2000 3000 martinique we bought in spring that we just love.
the twin 5.7 run great with 450 hrs. the new motor would not bother me it
would be every thing else if the motor blew or was not winterised right it
could be a sighn of how responsable the owners arn't and you may want to
have it inspected and the wellcraft is a heavy boat compaired to equil
sized boats which is why we bought it

A little underpowered in my opinion for a heavy 26 footer. I have sea
trialed SeaRay 26s with the same engine and they are underpowered. We
presently have a heavy 24 with the same engine, older version. It
cruises at 23 to 24 kts which is adequate but no speed demon.
