Johnson outboard control level function
I am a newbie boater (bought a used bass boat last year). and have
some questions about the functions of the control lever and a primer solenoid. The outboard is a Johnson V6, 150 HP outboard, circa 1990 The boat has a side mounted shift lever with red buttons on the thumbside and another on the underside of the handle. What are the functions of these buttons? On the engine, there is this little cyclindrical black unit, about 2-3" long, maybe 1-2 " dia, with a red lever. However, it has no marking which way it is supposed to be set. Can anyone here shed a light on how to set his lever? Given this info, can someone help me give a step by step procedure on how to start the engine? (I have a garden hose attachment for starting the engine out of the water) TIA for your help. |

Neutral release / Forward-Reverse Lock-out... it appears you have bought this boat & never have even sat in it & worked the shifter, or pretended to be flying down the lake? Again... it appears you have bought this boat & never have had it in the water or running, or even hooked up to a battery? How did you even find the primer or know what it is? What position did you find it in? What made you think it had to be moved or adjusted at all in the first place? What did the previous owner tell you? Given this info, can someone help me give a step by step procedure on how to start the engine? (I have a garden hose attachment for starting the engine out of the water) You will have to get someone to walk you through it in person, there are just too many things to miss and really mess up an otherwise good engine. For example, the "garden hose attachment for starting the engine out of the water" should not be used by a novice who cannot even identify or use the items you asked about above. As a matter of fact, a 150 HP Bass Boat should not be used by a novice who cannot even identify or use the items you asked about above. Please take a Power Squadron or Coast Guard boating course before leaving the dock, and get an experienced outboarder to assist you with the mechanical aspects TIA for your help. I am such a sucker. I bought this boat in June of last year, and actually used it twice that month just to try it out. Unfortunately, since I didn't have my own truck/SUV to tow it with, it sat in my driveway for the remainder of that time, and now I forgot all the things I learned about it. I needed the info so I can show the prospective buyer that the outboard is working fine. I just don't want to spend more money a truck to tow a toy that I now realized I don't have much time for. On a happier note, this boat is SOLD TODAY, so the info is no longer that pertinent. BTW, the primer valve/switch was in-line with the body (normal RUN/AUTO position) and searching the net, I was reminded that pushing the starter switch when it is turned on enables the primer. The motor kicks on right away. |

Wiz, unfortunately, I got the boat back :-( It was a contigent on boat inspection, and the marina he took it to says it needs carb work, gas tank pump out, and misc others, and the buyer decided to back out. We had agreed on $4k, alas it is now back in my possesion. Wanna buy it? 1990 Stratos 275 PRO Honestly, if I had used my brain more before the purchase, I shouldn't have bought it. At the time I had the money and it was burning my pcoket. I am sure many of us have bought foolish things and later regret it, not realizing what that purchase entails. owning it. I definitely did not forget owning it. It sat in my drive way and I see it daily, but not havng vehicle to tow it certainly is not conducive to hauling it to the lake. The boat ramp is only 1/2 mile from my home and might as well be 10 or 100 miles. |
