You know, if you build yourself a Mouseboat
(http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mouseboats) 8'x32" you might be able to close the hatch. Since a Mouseboat is 8' it can usually be stored "on end" in almost any room. The other great thing is that you can build them with sealed air boxes so they don't sink if you capsize and you re-enter like a sit-on-top.
