The ETECs seem to be a pretty good motor with better than average reliability. They certainly are strong and have good HP to weight ratios. They still burn oil. Expensive oil. I've moved myself over to "regular" four strokes because of that, because of the quieter operation of four strokes, and at the moment because of the fact that I've had no problems with my Yamaha 225. Why futz around with oil if you don't have to do so? When I was burning Yamalube, the stores/marinas selling Yamalube were never open on Saturday/Sunday...and closed before I got off work during the week. If I was planning an extended trip, and forgot to get my wife to buy the stuff in advance, I had to pay $30/gallon at West Marine. I can only imagine how hard it would be to track down the XD-100/200 stuff for those E-tecs. And then they want $40-50/gallon for it! I absolutely love my new F250's. Quiet, much better on fuel, and the top end is 3-5 mph faster than the 2-strokes they're replacing. |

"Harry Krause" wrote in message . .. That's cool. I'm not that interested in top end, but fuel economy interests me a great deal. I notice Suzuki now has a 300 hp four stroke, and my dealer tells me there is a decent chance Yamaha will have one next year. I see no advantage to using two strokes on boats the size of ours. Now, a 300 hp diesel outboard...that would be intriguing. There's an outfit in Australia that could probably whip one up for you. Eisboch |

You guys talkin' about Karen's monster Taipan diesel outboard? I believe there's a boat picture in the newsgroup database. That's the duotone model, right? White and Rust? With the beginning apprentice welding? That's it. Karen's pride & joy. My late father taught me some basics of welding, and I informally apprenticed with a union (night classes) to learn more. About 15 years ago, I actually passed a journeyman's exam for light construction welding techniques (rebar and the like), and then in Florida, I talked one of the local unions there into letting me into some pipe welding classes. These "future" steamfitters were training for shipbuilding, nuke plant refurbishing, and for chemical plant lab welding, techniques that require many years to perfect, and beyond my abilities. But when I saw the sloppy work on Smith's kitbashed "diesel outboard," I knew she was a fraud. No journeyman would let a piece of work that looked like that out of his shop. Probably like a lot of 'weekend warriors'. You should see my 2nd floor bathroom right now. I've got plaster and gyproc mixed together and am trying to skim coat/crack fill to make it look half decent. Next comes the tiling. 6" tiles on the walls up to the 3 foot level and 12" tiles on the floor. The 3 piece tub/shower unit is already in place and working... so after the tiles comes the toilet & pedestal sink. We're replacing all the lighting and upgrading the bathroom exhaust fan from a 53 cubic feet per min. to at least a 90 or a 110. Last will be new cabinet units to replace a dingy closet with a 2' wide door. Can't wait....sure is sweaty, dirty work for this time of year. |

If I was planning an extended trip, and forgot to get my wife to buy the stuff in advance, I had to pay $30/gallon at West Marine. ROFLMAO.... this from a guy that has the consummate preparation for hurricanes vs. the east coast..... yeah right.... get the old lady to do it..... you wuss..... On the Friday's that I was off, I'd buy the stuff. But if I had to work on a Friday, and we had last-minute plans to make a long trip, I'd occasionally have to send the wife. BTW--those east coast folks had about 5 days notice. The day before the storm, most of the businesses and retailers were closed, but the gas stations were open ... and nobody was in line buying gas. Seriously..... when I ran the 2-strokes, I would buy from a bulk can .... taking my own used bottles to fill up. An expense, but a manageable one. I'm sold on 4-strokes.... I bought Yamalube "in bulk", and the stuff they sold me was a different color. The parts counter swears it was the same stuff, but why would they make it a different color? I never trusted I was buying "the good stuff" when I bought in bulk. I'd buy a case, and he'd give me 10% off (still about $19/gallon). I repeat...... I'm sold on 4-strokes.... Me too. I sold the 25' Whaler to my dad about 1 1/2 years after I repowered it with a Suzuki 250 four-stroke. I loved the Suzuki, and would have repowered the Grady with the Suzuki, but I was concerned about resale later on. Grady's come with Yamaha's, and they have better resale with Yamaha's. |

Yes, but over time, it's less expensive than regular oil changes for four strokes. 100 hours of operation burning 18 gph at 100:1 is 18 gallons of that stuff. At $32/gallon, that's $576...which is much more than it costs to replace the four-stroke oil and oil filter. Heck, I can go to the dealer and get the plugs changed, the lower gear oil changed, the engine oil changed, the oil filter changed, and all the fittings greased for about $500. But I suspect that the E-tecs burn a little bit more oil than 100:1...which means that the cost savings of a four stroke is even better. |
