Haven't we all got better things to do? Actually, here it is: ********* The Internet Troll Personality Disorder is characterized by attention-seeking and disruptive behavior in anonymous, delocalized places of socializing. It is indicated by the following traits: 1. A tendency to make provocative comments to invoke emotional responses in others 2. A lack of connection to the community being trolled; i.e., will leave if desired response is not invoked ("Do not feed the trolls!") 3. A dissatisfaction with one's life and a cynical attitude towards things in general 4. A tendency to challenge the rules and authorities of a community 5. A preference to exhibit these behaviors only in places where one's true identity is unknown Disclaimer: It takes a qualified professional to diagnose anyone with a personality disorder. Source: http://www.behavenet.com/capsules/di...sification.htm ********** So if we examine those in some detail: The Internet Troll Personality Disorder is characterized by attention-seeking and disruptive behavior in anonymous, delocalized places of socializing. It is indicated by the following traits: 1. A tendency to make provocative comments to invoke emotional responses in others {You would certainly need to include posting political crap into a newsgroup that isn't intended to be political in nature and where participants have a reasonable expectation of different subject matter as "provocative", wouldn't you? Then of course there are the personal attacks from any side, "to invoke emotional responses in others."} 2. A lack of connection to the community being trolled; i.e., will leave if desired response is not invoked ("Do not feed the trolls!") {Wouldn't it seem obvious that those people who never (or seldom) post anything in rec.boats that isn't a political troll exhibit a "lack of connection to the community being trolled"?} 3. A dissatisfaction with one's life and a cynical attitude towards things in general {Yup, there you go. 90% of trolls are bitching about something. It's either the GD liberals, or the GD president, or the GD poster with a different political opinion, or the GD poster who dares to suggest it would be better to remain on topic in the NG.} 4. A tendency to challenge the rules and authorities of a community {While there are no authorities in rec.boats, there are some rules of common courtesy and a reasonable expectation that with the tens of thousands of sites available on the internet the guys who want to argue politics all the time can more easily find a "GD the liberals" or a "GD the president" site than boaters can find other boating sites. Comments like, "You're absolutely out of line to suggest that anybody posting OT topic here could be out of line, everybody should be able to post what they want- unless what they want to post is a reminder to stay on topic...." certainly challenges the unwritten "rules" of the community.} 5. A preference to exhibit these behaviors only in places where one's true identity is unknown {Exhibit A: NOYB. Who the heck is NOYB? Is Bert Robbins really Bert's name? Yes, you're actually Harry Krause. Not everybody exhibits all 5 characteristics.Check out the posts from other trolls, and you will notice that most of them do not use a complete or actual name.} Disclaimer: It takes a qualified professional to diagnose anyone with a personality disorder.
