Okay, so I looked at a late 80's Bayliner today. I'm in Southeast MI
so I'm surrounded by tons of freshwater lakes. But I noticed this
string of white stuff on the hull. The guy says the boat used to be in
sal****er. Does this salt residue come off? It looks like unsanded
drywall patches, albiet small ones.

Exactly...I purposely drove inland and returned trailering a boat 1700
miles so I could get a freshwater cottage boat. The harsh ocean
environment can be hard on older models.

I concur. We pay a premimium on boats here in fresh water country, for
a very good reason (my boat cost a few thou more than a similar model
would, kept in salt water on either coast).

Guys like Don trailer boats back to coast, for a good reason. I've seen
boats as old as mine on the coast and it was like looking at me compared
to Aussie sun-worshipper of the same age. Kinda scarey. Personally, I
wouldn't buy a boat that's seen salt water unless it was CONSIDERABLY
cheaper than a similar boat kept in fresh water.
