A very nice thing they did

My wife was with me working on the boat on Thursday at our new marina. This
is our first year at this marina (we trailer the boat last year).

Taking a break from working on the boat she walked over to our new dock to
assess how easy it will be for her to step down to the dock from land (these
are drive up docks with a 6 inch step down from land to the dock). She
asked if I could assemble and install a support pole with a handle for her,
close to where you fist step down onto the dock. As most of you know she
wears a leg brace due to a debilitating and slowly degrading muscular
condition in her leg and is therefore not very stable. I asked her to
check with the office next time she drove up there to make sure it was OK,
which she did. Their response was "no problem".

Upon arriving at the boat yesterday I found that the marina had welded a
support pole with grab handle at our dock directly onto the seawall abutting
our dock. I certainly could not have done better.

I drove to the office and thanked the owner. I found out that the employee
who did the work has a brother (also working at the marina) who wears the
same type of brace as my wife due to a permanent muscle injury while playing
basketball.

Nice folks. I think we will like it here. ;-)

Don't recall ever reading in the past what her injury was.
Glad to see she can still enjoy boating.

We sold our 32 footer as she was not able to help me bring the boat in when
the winds were moderate to high. (She would stand on the swim platform
while I sterned in, but could no longer do so).

She has had this neurological problem for the past 4 or so years, with it
getting a little worse every year; She has seen neurologists at the
University Hospital System and continues now sees a specialist at the
Cleveland Clinic, without any diagnosis to date as to the cause of her
condition. She has gone through tests after tests and underwent some sort
of injections to help stimulate the muscles and help them grow back.
Nothing helped.

When she started falling in her classroom (she was an elementary school
teacher, 2nd grade to be exact) it was obvious it was time for her to
retire. We sold the boat that same year (at the end of the 2003 boating
season).

We lasted 1 1/2 years without a boat (after owning boats for over 25 years)
and got the itch to get back into it.....but on a much smaller scale. We
ran across this 20 foot runabout late last summer and it met all our needs.
We purchased it and trailered it through the remainder of the season....
deciding to dock it this year to make life easier. ;-)

Thus the reason for selling the big boat and buying a smaller boat......one
that I can easily dock on mine own, regardless of the wind.

Indeed. And actually they are the owners, not managers............2
brothers.

Back in 1989 or so we docked at this marina when we had our Chris Craft 210
Scorpion. We left when we purchased our Sea Ray 270 Sundancer. Same
owners. Same friendly attititude. Electric and water at the dock. Drive up
with a nice grassy area at the dock and some 75 feet deep behind us on the
other side of the access road (with trees for shade). Nothing fancy but we
don't need that anymore as we will not be spending the weekend on the
boat.....day trips only then back home.

The downside is that the restroom (near the main office) is a good 4-5
minute walk away......I take the car when I am lazy or exhausted from
working on the boat. ;-)

You would sooner see us heading to the bathroom on a bicycle.

Some folks have golf carts.......most walk or use their car. I will soon
be putting the porta potty on the boat.......except for #1 the restroom
trips will not be needed. I will however, have to empty the darn thing.

Oh how I miss our bigger boats with a bathroom and holding tank. ;-)

My boat had a porta-potty. The wife wanted it left in, and I wanted it out.
Finally I told her that if she would clean it, it could stay in the boat,
but I was not going to clean it.

Now it's where it belongs - somewhere in the basement, to be reinstalled
when we sell the boat!

I firmly believe in getting what you need and nothing more.
If you don't plan on extended cruises or heading out into big open
waters...why have a large boat with all the expenses attached.
I crewed with a guy who did this for about 5 years.
I don't believe he actually spent one full night on his Mirage 33
(unless it was to sleep off a few drinks..or entertain a lady friend
right at his slip in the yacht squadron.
For daysailing and the occasional weekender, my 19' mini-cruiser suits
me just fine.
Now I can't wait until I get my new customized trailer to hook on the
back of the new Ranger pickup.

My boat came with a MSD c/w small holding tank and pumpout fitting.
In this area all the sailboats still use the old straight discharge type
head. If I was only planning on sailing the ocean, I'd take the small
unit out & install a proper head.

I have to agree with you and JohnH, I would hate to have a porta potty on
board any boat, either on mine, or a friends. # 1 over the side, or in the
water, #2 is in a marina. There are too many ways for a porta potty to make
a mess in a boat, none of them pretty.

If you are having bowel problems and can not hold a BM, you probably should

I *never* had any problems when we had porta potties in our smaller boats.

Indeed. And actually they are the owners, not managers............2
brothers.

Back in 1989 or so we docked at this marina when we had our Chris Craft
210
Scorpion. We left when we purchased our Sea Ray 270 Sundancer. Same
owners. Same friendly attititude. Electric and water at the dock.
Drive
up
with a nice grassy area at the dock and some 75 feet deep behind us on
the
other side of the access road (with trees for shade). Nothing fancy but
we
don't need that anymore as we will not be spending the weekend on the
boat.....day trips only then back home.

The downside is that the restroom (near the main office) is a good 4-5
minute walk away......I take the car when I am lazy or exhausted from
working on the boat. ;-)

Get yourself one of these: http://tinyurl.com/cvzc6

You could probably fit it on the boat!

You would sooner see us heading to the bathroom on a bicycle.

Some folks have golf carts.......most walk or use their car. I will
soon
be putting the porta potty on the boat.......except for #1 the restroom
trips will not be needed. I will however, have to empty the darn thing.

Oh how I miss our bigger boats with a bathroom and holding tank. ;-)

My boat had a porta-potty. The wife wanted it left in, and I wanted it
out.
Finally I told her that if she would clean it, it could stay in the boat,
but I was not going to clean it.

Now it's where it belongs - somewhere in the basement, to be reinstalled
when we sell the boat!

I think

I take it she does not go out on the boat with you anymore.

There is really nothing hard to maintain a porta potty.

Except for the cleaning the foul smelling thing.

If yours is foul smelling you need to learn to maintain it properly.

Ours is generally used only for #1, but #2 in an emergency. In that
case I empty it immediately once getting back to the dock.

Like I said, I never had any problems.

A very nice thing they did

JimH,
The last thing my wife would think I was being is considerate, if I told her
to squat on a porta pottie or if I had to carry the porta potty home to
clean it out. The marinas all are on septic tanks, and do not allow dumping
porta potties in the toilets.
She would want me to, and I would eagerly go to, a marina with a clean
toilet. If I did not have a head aboard the boat, I would remind everyone
before we left the marina is to "hit the head". Just becuase someone does
not like the idea of having a porta potty onboard a boat, doesn't mean that
person is inconsiderate.

My friend, an Ontario Provincial Police officer who gets the
much-vied-for summer boating duty, tells me that about 80% of male
drowning victims are found with their flys down. Yup, guys taking a
leak over the side.

I rarely survive an afternoon's sail without a trip to the head, and I
don't even drink beer. If my husband were as understanding as a few of
you guys he'd be sailing alone (actually he wouldn't be sailing at all
because he would never have bought the boat because I would have said -
no we aren't buyin that POS! are you f'in crazy! I ain't goin on that
thing! there's nowhere to pee but over the side!)

OTOH - I am the one who maintains/empties it.

Thanks for pounding some sense into these numskulls who somehow think it is
difficult to use and keep clean. ;-)

I like the responses saying that they would ask their wife to wait till they
get back to the dock. Heck, when my wife needs to pee, she needs to pee.
Same with me. We aren't waiting for a 20-30 minute ride back to the marina.

But sometimes, wiping is the only thing that counts! One of the guys I
fish with I think has an overactive digestive tract, and it seems that
getting out on a boat makes that condition flare up. I swear, I ask him
every single time if he needs to take a dump before we shove off. No.
About five minutes motoring and next thing I'll hear, if we are in my
boat, is "pull over there".....
