If I take the boat somewhere to write a destinatin article, for instance, I can deduct my expenses up to the amount that I earn writing that article. However, my nemesis the AMT comes around and wipes out most of my legitimate deductions, so the actual cash benefit to me is either zero or very negligible. The original editor for the publication had a contract that required him, as a condition of employment, to own and maintain a powerboat at least 35-feet in length. Joila, instant business expense- but I think you'd need a pair the size of grapefruit to try that same tax stunt in this day and age. :-) |
