I need to ship a 23 foot powerboat across the country, from New Hampshire to
Oregon. The boat is on a trailer, but I would prefer to have it trucked or rail shipped. Anyone with any recommendations, hints, or places to avoid? Any ball park of what this might cost? If it's much over $2000 I will probably just bag the idea. I have googled "boat transport", but I'm more interested in "real world" experiences. thanks in advance, Mike |

It's going to cost you considerably more than $2000 no matter how you ship it - even towing it unless you do it yourself and even then, it's going to be close. Yep. That is a minimum 2,500 mile trip and both gasoline and diesel prices are now rising. |

I'm sure at least one trucker would welcome the opportunity to make $500.00 or so on that long boring trip. |

I'm sure at least one trucker would welcome the opportunity to make $500.00 or so on that long boring trip. (1) No commercial truck drives that far in ANY direction empty. (2) Flat beds are harder to find than dry vans and are at a premium ($$). (3) A flat bed would have to be able to haul the boat and trailer. If the boat isn't too tall it may be too wide. If the whole thing does fit on a flatbed trailer, the logistics of loading and unloading would be a huge concern ($$). If you have time, you might be able to find someone driving a large pickup to that area but you would still have to expect to shell out at least a grand to cover the hassle and additional fuel expense. Selling it and buying new later might be worth it. Dan |

Just be sure not to pay them the full amount until you throughly inspect your
boat on arrival. I missed some damage which American Boat Transport refused to pay for. Check with boat dealers at your destination and departure points to see who they deal with. I missed some damage which American Boat Transport refused to pay for. Thanks for reminding me of the name of that transport company - "American Boat Transport". During one of my many trips to and from Florida I, was cruising along, doing about 70 on RT 95 when I saw a semi pulling onto the highway from an entrance ramp. The flat bed was loading with a big - probably 35-40 foot sailboat. I remember it had a blue hull. The boat looked huge on the truck which had wide load signs on it but no escort. About 2 miles further on down the road this rig blew by me doing close to 90. A couple of cars were ahead of it and the rig's driver started pulling on the air horn to get them to move out of the way. One didn't and the driver had to lock up all the trailer brakes, vaporized rubber smoke bellowing everywhere, horn blasting and trailer with the boat swaying all over the road. Quite a sight with this big, heavy sailboat strapped high on the trailer because of the boat's keel. By this time I had caught up to it again in the granny lane and headed for the breakdown lane, fully expecting a major wreck in the making. The offending car quickly got out of the way and the truck continued on, accelerating back to a crazy speed and weaving back and forth around traffic until it was out of sight again. It was such a demonstration of reckless driving that I took note of the name of the company - American Boat Transport - intending to give them a call. But then, I forgot the name. I would not use that company to ship a rowboat. BTW, the driver was a woman. RCE |
