If a boat is a "cable's length" away from another, how far apart are the
two boats?

There are slight variations depending on country, but it's roughly 600 feet.

Is it true that a sea mile is a little longer than a land mile and a lot
wetter?

yes to both the length of a nautical mile and the degree of wetness. A
NM is one minute long. " A nautical mile is 1,852 meters, or 1.852
kilometers.
In the English measurement system, a nautical mile is 1.1508 miles, or
6,076 feet."
