Learning to Sail - Without A Boat

Many people learn to sail by going sailing with their
friends or parents. But how do you get started if
you do not know anybody with a boat?

There are two methods - one if you have money, one if you don't.
1. If you have a little money - take lessons.
2. If you don't have any money to spare, go to the nearest yacht club, and
sign up to race as crew. Wear white soled (non marking soles) shoes (yes,
those are called boat shoes). Don't show up with black shoes, and tell the
skipper they won't mark the boat because he already knows that you're
guessing (you haven't been on his boat, so how can you know they won't mark
the deck?). Serious crew bring their boat shoes in their gear bag, and
change on the dock so as not to get motor oil on their shoes in the parking
lot (but they already have a ride, and aren't trying to get in the door!).

Of course, the very best boats have plenty of volunteers, but the others
need help often. If you are persistant, you will succeed. This is the way
Dennis Conner started, and it's what I did after I had a few lessons in
racing dinghys.

Learning the language of sailing is the toughest part of sailing. The
terminology varies from boat to boat, and there is no proper term for
anything (so don't get hung up on it - accept corrections from seniors, even
if they prove false in the long run. At least you learned!)

Good luck, and here's hoping you won't need it!
