For me the rule of thumb to get insurance is when I can't replace
something out of my own wallet when I need to or when it's mandatory.

So I have a health insurance, an insurance against storm damage and a
few more things. Considering the cost to insure my kayak (outside of a
year 'round travel insurance), especially when paddling more difficult
whitewater and considering the little letters than exclude just about
anything that might happen to the boat, I pass.

I'll buy another boat if I either do something stupid that makes me lose
the boat on the river or invest the money otherwise spent on insurance
in a functional locking system.
