Funny.

Just read "Consent to Kill" by Vince Flynn. Over the top but not bad for
light entertainment. Anyway the story involves a few pages with a latino
gang in the DC area with the name "Mara Salvatrucha 13" or MS13. I believe
the Spanish for trout is Trucha. I've been trying to understand a
translation of the name but am not having any luck. Perhaps there is a
relationship to the slang meaning?? Save a trout?? I don't think so. :=)

It's for sure that MS 13 is one of the largest and most violent gangs in
the area. It's not limited to DC, and is widespread in Fairfax County
schools. I think the 13 refers to the age at which they are heavily
recruited!

A little background on the name:

Named for La Mara, a street in San Salvador, and the Salvatrucha guerillas
who fought in El Salvador’s bloody civil war, Mara Salvatrucha 13 was
organized in Los Angeles in the late ’80s. At first, the gang’s primary
purpose was to defend Salvadoran immigrants from being preyed upon by other
L.A. street gangs.
