One can only hope the two be continued was his engine crapping out on
one of those turns and the boat flips decapitating him.

Anybody notice the smoke out of the engine in the turns?

Yep. And black smoke to boot. Not good.

What makes that guy an idiot?
Is it the close encounters with other boats at high speed or is it something
more subtle.

I trust you are kidding.

I don't think there was anything subtle about his total disregard of the
rules of the road.....all close quarter passes with no regard to the safety
of the other boats or the possible catastrophic consequences of his
maneuvers.

Don't go anywhere near Annapolis Harbor on a Sunday in the summer. You'll
be run down by sailboters who care not a whit for the rules of the road or
anything else.

At the risk of ****ing off any resident blow boaters, I have to agree 100%.
Why, when they have power, do they insist on sailing all the way down a
crowded, busy, narrow harbor channel, tacking back and forth within 40-50
feet? Even at 5 knots, my Navigator won't stop on a dime to avoid them when
they suddenly decide to tack to port from the other side of the channel.

You'd be surprised how far forward a 20+ ton boat continues to move forward,
even when the transmissions are in reverse with power on when trying to stop
suddenly from any speed. Normally at 5 knots I usually plan my stops about
30 yards away, putting it in neutral and letting it set up for the
prevailing wind and current.

The only time I would sail a narrow channel would be under uncrowded
conditions where you would have plenty of room to stay clear of a tacking
sailboat or if I did not have power. I do not find it agreeable to sail
narrow channels when unnecessary due to the overwhelming presence of
examples as illustrated by the video with this topic.

When they start behaving that way, I simply stop the boat and force them
to jibe to avoid hitting me. I don't do this in the middle of a channel,
but in the Annapolis area, no matter what you are doing with your boat,
even if you are anchored way out of the channel and either fishing or
daydreaming, you stand a good chance of being rammed by a blowboter.

I don't know if you know the inlet, but St. Augustine Inlet, which dumps
into the ocean, almost always has a southerly wind blowing across it, and
a heavy tidal current. At least once a week when I lived there, some
sailbaoter would run aground on the soft sand of Vilano Beach there while
trying to run the inlet under sail. These were sailboats with engines.

Call the Coast Guard and tell them the captain's chugging directly out of a
bottle of some sort of brown liquor.

passing me that close at that speed may invite a 12 ga slug below the

I agree, that guy should be banned from boating. I would think anyone

We had a discussion about this picture, specifically the warning sign,
sometime last year. To me the sign looks more like an advertising sign
(Danger Shoal Grill and Bar 100 yards ahead) than an actual warning sign.
It is also not visible in all directions, as the fat slob in the picture
proves.

I'm not familiar with that rule, but it wouldn't apply to my style of
