Among other things, this points out that there should be a way of testing
one's microphone to determine optimum distance for intelligibility. I
can't make out a single word from the vessel in distress.


Agreed, it was hard to make out sometimes, but the poor guy was obviously in
a high tension mode. Lesson here, I think, is to try to modulate the
excitement and speak as normally and clearly as you can, given the
circumstances.
