JimC,
CBC disagrees with you about Canadian Private Healthcare. http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/he...s_private.html "Jim Carter" wrote in message ... I, for one, did pay a premium with a private insurance company for "special" treatments such as private hospital room instead of a ward bed. I also had dental care and eye glasses paid by the insurance company. The very rich get special facilities because of the higher price that they pay in insurance and the very poor don't pay anything as the government takes complete care of them. The reason that you were only partly correct is that there is not "private" health care available, here in Canada, Jim C. |

As one of Canada's 'have not' provinces, Nova Scotia has a hard time affording our medical care...especially when the Federal gov't under that smarmy %$^%& Brian Mulroney so drastically reduced their share of the costs. One of the first 'private clinics' was opened by the infamous Henry Morgentaler to perform abortions.....even though 1500 a year were already being performed quietly at a major hospital in the city. So much for being private....he took the provincial govt to court to force it to include his services under the medical act and therefore pay his clinic for services. Now we get situations where doctors buy an expensive piece of testing equipment and advertise speedy service for a fee rather than wait months for free tests. |

One of my union clients provides a "supplemental" program to its Canadian members to cover those items. Dues subsidize the cost of the program, so the out-of-pocket to the Canadian union member approaches zero. I buy my health insurance from my union, It's expensive, but the deductibles are zip and the co-pays are low. I pay $15 for a doctor's office visit. It's a PPO plan, and so far the few doctors I've seen through the program are first-rate. If I need an Rx, the generics are $5 to $8, and the "name brands" are 20% of the regular price. When working, my wife & I had two plans to cover prescriptions, eye glasses, private hospital room...even massages if you needed one. My plan disappeared when I retired but she is still included under her company's family plan, but must pay half the costs ($80.00 CDN per month) |

Don,
Is that a bad thing? In all countries they allocate limited medical resources in some fashion or other. In those countries with socialized medicine, they use a "wait" period to help allocate limited resources. Should those who don't want to wait, be forced to travel to the US? "Lord Reginald Smithers" Ask me about my driveway leading up to my manor. wrote in message ... JimC, CBC disagrees with you about Canadian Private Healthcare. http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/he...s_private.html Thank you Lord Smithers for the article from CBC. I did read this and I can, perhaps, change my perception of what is "private". It is really a misnomer. It is "extra" that I pay for the insurance to get a little bit better treatment as far as the rooms, and certain services that are not covered by the government. Some things not covered for most people are eyeglasses and dental treatment. The government believes that if you can afford to pay for certain services, then the government will not cover it for you. Poor people get 100% coverage. What I take as "Private" Health care is when you don't have to wait for services. This is technically illegal in Canada. Certain clinics were "grandfathered" into the system but no new ones are allowed. The one thing that we have here in Canada is the treatment for our veterans. There treatment is like "Royal" treatment. My Dad gets anything he needs for free and it's delivered to his house. If he needs to go to the doctors office. He can take a wheelchair bus and it is free, door to door. I hope I have explained it to you OK. I am not a very good writer. Jim C. |
