53% of Venezuelans live in poverty. If Chavez were truly concerned about
the poor and destitute, he'd have turned his sites on lowering the poverty
rate in his country...instead of making a token gesture in the backyard of
Bush's 2004 political opponent just to take a jab at Bush.

It's ironic, though, that he singled out the folks in Massachusetts (a very
"Blue" state) as those most in need of help.

We red-staters would have told him to stuff it.

Massachusetts in energy deal with Venezuela
Deal provides discounted oil to needy in state
The Associated Press
Updated: 3:25 p.m. ET Nov. 22, 2005

QUINCY, Mass. - Venezuelan officials signed a deal Tuesday to ship 12
million gallons (45 million liters) of discounted home heating oil to
poor Americans in Massachusetts as part of plan by Venezuelan leader Hugo
Chavez to help needy U.S. communities.

The fuel is being offered by Citgo Petroleum Corp., a subsidiary of
Venezuela's state-owned oil company which runs roughly 16,000 gas
stations in the U.S.

U.S. Rep. William Delahunt, who helped broker the deal, called the
agreement "an expression of humanitarianism at its very best," and
rejected criticism that the move was motivated by politics. Chavez often
blames the plight of the poor on unbridled capitalism and had criticized
U.S. President George W. Bush's government for failing to reduce poverty.

"This is a gesture about people," said Delahunt, a Democrat.

Delahunt said the agreement could set an example for U.S. oil companies.
Congressional leaders have asked the companies to use some of their
profits to fund heating fuel assistance programs for low-income
residents.

"I just hope that this sends a message, and that other oil companies will
step and help also," Delahunt said.

Reducing costs?
Chavez announced the idea of offering fuel directly to poor U.S.
communities during a visit to Cuba in August. He has said the aim is to
bypass middlemen to reduce costs for the American poor.

Good for Chavez. He's doing more than Bush, Inc., is doing.

Poisitively? I've got to stop hanging out here with the right-wing grammar
school dropouts.

Of course you would. You red-staters have the federal trough to feed at.

But then, I guess us blue-staters can afford it.

Ya gotta know the territory.........

Joe Kennedy (former MA Congressman, Bobby's son, Teddy's nephew) has been
distributing discounted heating oil in MA for years through his Citizen's
Energy Corp. Its a great company that he set up on his own initiative, and
it does real good directly among those who need the help, without he
truckloads of administrative crap that customarily go with such plans. Even
though he supposedly left public life some years ago to keep his family out
of range of the newsas*$oles and to run Citizen's Energy, Joe is perennially
touted as a likely candidate for Governor.... Senator....Congress.....
VP....take your pick.... because he is very smart, articulate, photogenic,
common sensible (insofar as a dem is able bg) and has an inarguable track
record as a successful leader in both private and public sectors. With the
Kennedy name in MA, he is, in short, the 800 lb gorilla, whether he declares
or not.

Bill Delahunt had been a reasonably well known and successful local hack/pol
for many years until he managed to get himself into Congress some years ago.
Now that he's got a Federal meal ticket, Delahunt has aspirations. He
suffers, however, from the standard malady of a lot of pols -- he's a stiff
when speaking ex temp on the stump. But the Kennedys were born with that
gene. (Its the blarney, I guess) Any Dem in MA with statewide or federal
aspirations lives in fear that Joe K may decide to climb back into the ring.
There's no doubt in my mind that this oil deal, while likely (potentially)
doing someone some good, was conceived as a way to portray Delahunt on a par
with Kennedy in at least one area, or to try to neutralize just one of the
factors that would make Joe Kennedy a friendly candidate to so many folks
here.

Perhaps, but I would expect Delahunt is just an accidental beneficiary of
Chavez's "geopolitical weapon". Chavez has been using Venezuela's oil
wealth to expand his influence in the Americas, and to undercut American
"imperialism". He just loves to tweak our noses. Robertson calls for his
assassination, and he responds with "cheap oil".

Perhaps. You may well be right. Even if initiated by Chavez, however, I
suspect the choice of Delahunt as his mark was not wholly accidental.

I wouldn't argue that. Someone ought to tell NewsMax, though. Delahunt
isn't even mentioned.

You must be very uncomfortable living in the bluest state in the union,
especially with the high level of education.

How can you stand to stay there?

Its home, and politics is the #1 sport. Why should I be uncomfortable with
the ed level? If I left, I'd lower the average.
