JohnH,
Kerry was the average GI Joe in Vietnam. He didn't want to be there, he did everything he could to get out of there, something most of the young men in America did. The problem is when he got home he attacked the soldiers and their actions in a terrible war with no enemy that was easily identifiable. There were many antiwar activist who attacked the policy of Viet Nam without attacking the soldiers. His strategy of suddenly trying to become a war hero did not fool anyone. But on a serious side, Kerry is not an intellect, not by any stretch of the imagination. If he truly was an intellect, he might have won. He is someone of average intelligence, who tried to act like an intellect and he just bored people to sleep. He tried to act like a hero, too, but that didn't work. Today, about a 33% of the country consider themselves strong Republicans, about 40% consider themselves strong Democrats, most of the remaining consider themselves independent. The only reason (and I do mean the only reason) the Democrats lost is the Democrats blew it. Don't try to place the blame on anyone but the Democrats.
