I got hordes of relatives coming over the holidays, and they all have
laptops or so it seems.

Why would they travel to see you, your wife and their other relatives but
bring their laptops with them?

Is this something that runs in the family Harry? ;-)

They are active individuals with lots of interests, and use their laptops
to get local information, stay in touch with their buddies, read email,
buy tickets, et cetera: the same reasons most people I know take their
laptops with them whether they are traveling for business or pleasure.

While I was in Hawaii, I got an assignment from a client in Baltimore to
write a speech, with a draft due while still out there. Without my laptop,
I wouldn't have been able to handle the job. I also used it to stay in
touch with my petsitter, and my neighbor drove over to the house every day
to check the locks.

Even if I traveled with my laptop for use on the plane or airport, I would
never ask the relative/friend I was visiting to make accommodations for my
internet connection while visiting them.

Personally I would *NEVER* travel with my laptop while on vacation.

But hey, different strokes I guess.
