Bush off the wagon?
"Harry Krause" wrote in message ... While waiting my turn in the supermarket checkout, I couldn't help noticing the latest "ish" of Globe Magazine, which is featuring a story claiming Presidummy Bush is "off the wagon" *again*, and drinking heavily. Naturally, I didn't buy the Globe, and I can't find a decent website for the rag, but... Sometimes the stories these pubs carry are true, and sometimes they are not. The gist of the story is that his failing policies and his tumbling polls have made Presidummy irritable and nervous, and he's drinking again for "comfort." I, of course, never thought he quit drinking, but... Did the magazine also report on finding human life on Mars? |

Few of our Presidents were teetotalers, and some drank to excess. Rumors abound about Nixon's last days in office. I'm no Bush sympathizer, but if his problem is recurring, I wish him the best getting back under control. Politics be damned. |

The interesting thing is that when Bush said he had a drinking problem, he never did what he was supposed to do, and admit he was an alcoholic, he didn't get therapy, and he apparently did not connect with a support group, such as AA. Instead, he found Jesus or some such nonsense. That may be what you are "supposed to do", but whatever keeps you sober works. Have you noticed how stress ages a President? Carter is probably the most obvious example. He went in youthful with a bounce to his step. Four years later, he was old, gray, and wrinkled. I didn't notice much aging on Bush his first four years, but look at him now. It's very clearly starting to show. I don't like the SOB, but I do hope we are talking rumors with no basis in fact. |

Isn't it wonderful that Clinton and now Jimmy Carter, too, are beginning to point out the utter failures of the Bush Administration in areas important to all Americans? Don't know if it's wonderful, but sure is ironic that America's only impeached President, and it's most bumbling in recent times are discussion the failures of others. Carter gave us Middle East problems that continue to this day, stagflation, a weakened defense, and he gave America's Panama Canal and Canal Zone away to Noriega. The US continues to pay a high price for Carter's failures to this day. He was a disaster for the US. -- Skipper |

It is funny that he relates a cigar to Clinton. What a legacy. Here's a bit of the bit from the Enquirer: BUSH'S BOOZE CRISIS By JENNIFER LUCE and DON GENTILE Faced with the biggest crisis of his political life, President Bush has hit the bottle again, The National Enquirer can reveal. Bush, who said he quit drinking the morning after his 40th birthday, has started boozing amid the Katrina catastrophe. Family sources have told how the 59-year-old president was caught by First Lady Laura downing a shot of booze at their family ranch in Crawford, Texas, when he learned of the hurricane disaster. His worried wife yelled at him: "Stop, George." Following the shocking incident, disclosed here for the first time, Laura privately warned her husband against "falling off the wagon" and vowed to travel with him more often so that she can keep an eye on Dubya, the sources add. "When the levees broke in New Orleans, it apparently made him reach for a shot," said one insider. "He poured himself a Texas-sized shot of straight whiskey and tossed it back. The First Lady was shocked and shouted: "Stop George!" "Laura gave him an ultimatum before, 'It's Jim Beam or me.' She doesn't want to replay that nightmare — especially now when it's such tough going for her husband." Bush is under the worst pressure of his two terms in office and his popularity is near an all-time low. The handling of the Katrina crisis and troop losses in Iraq have fueled public discontent and pushed Bush back to drink. A Washington source said: "The sad fact is that he has been sneaking drinks for weeks now. Laura may have only just caught him — but the word is his drinking has been going on for a while in the capital. He's been in a pressure cooker for months.
