Nearly Half of Coral Reefs in Peril

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) -- Nearly half of the world's coral reefs may be
lost in the next 40 years unless urgent measures are taken to protect
them against the threat of climate change, according to a new report
released Tuesday by the World Conservation Union.
The Swiss-based organization called for the establishment of additional
marine protected areas to prevent further degradation by making corals
more robust and helping them resist bleaching.

"Twenty percent of the earth's coral reefs, arguably the richest of all
marine ecosystems, have been effectively destroyed today,'' said Carl
Gustaf Lundin, head of the agency's marine environment program who
helped write the report "Coral Reef Resilience and Resistance to
Bleaching.''

"Another 30 percent will become seriously depleted if no action is
taken within the next 20-40 years, with climate change being a major
factor for their loss,'' he said in a statement.

Coral bleaching is caused by increased surface temperatures in the high
seas and higher levels of sunlight caused by climate change. As
temperatures rise, the algae on which corals depend for food and color
die out, causing the coral to whiten, or "bleach.''

Prolonged bleaching conditions over ten weeks can eventually lead to
the death of the coral.

"Current predictions are that massive coral bleaching will become a
regular event over the next 50 years,'' Lundin said.

In its report, the organization said that marine parks reduce the
stress on coral reef ecosystems by reducing the impact of pollution and
overfishing.

The report also recommends a strategy for the establishment of a global
marine park network in the face of climate change, covering all
important marine ecosystems including coral reefs.

Other key strategies to enable coral reefs to be more resilient to
bleaching are sustainable fisheries management and integrated coastal
management, the report found.

"Destructive fishing practices such as blast or poison fishing can make
coral reef more vulnerable to bleaching,'' said The Nature
Conservancy's Rod Salm in a statement. "It can decrease coral cover or
deplete fish populations that are important for the coral reef
ecosystem.

Yep, it'll come soon enough. Got to wait just long enough for the lock

No, coral reefs have been dying, some from predators because man has eaten
or collected the king conch which is a predator of the starfish which eats
the coral and some from climate, particularly near the equator. Coral is
very fragile and lives in a very small temperature range - depth. As temps
increase it will move north of the equator provided there is a shallow
enough location for it to flourish.

The major problem at this time, especially in the great barrier reefs is the
Starfish.

Temperature seems to play a role in coral bleaching. But there is ample
historical data of bleaching periods when ocean temps were *not* in an
elevated state. Science hasn't been able to come up with an explanation to
that paradox yet. So blaming it on global warming is lazy science.

Sometimes scientists test theories by NOT doing something to a test subject,
or stopping something that's already happening. Placebos would be an example

Back in the early 1980s, American doctors were asked to visit a remote
village in China to investigate why the rate of esophagus cancer was about
50 times higher than anyone had ever heard of. They found that a local
specialty, some sort of pickled cabbage, developed foam on top of the
fermenting stuff, and that this foam was considered a delicacy. It was also
loaded with nitrites, the ones we add to processed meats. They stopped the
locals from eating it. The rate of cancer dropped like a rock.

You *could* say that perhaps something else was introduced to the diet,
water or air and caused the improvement. But, proving a negative seems to
have worked.

"It can decrease coral cover or
deplete fish populations that are important for the coral reef
ecosystem.

No, coral reefs have been dying, some from predators because man has

We're still going to need to see your data, imbecile. Prove that we are
having no measurable effect which can be lessened through behavioral

Temperature seems to play a role in coral bleaching. But there is ample
historical data of bleaching periods when ocean temps were *not* in an
elevated state. Science hasn't been able to come up with an explanation
to that paradox yet. So blaming it on global warming is lazy science.

an example of the former.

But you're talking about destroying the global economy in the interest of

Would those scientists receive their grants if they pointed to starfish?

The typical liebral "prove a negative" debate tactic is duly noted as
well.
Natural global climate change is a fact.........the ice age being just one
example. "Man made global climate change" is a hypothesis derived from
the
junk science world.

They proved a positive. The foam was loaded with nitrates.

Pretty serious, but in all my years of watching pollution regs put in place,
I've never seen ONE that was immediate. You will now say that "immediate" is
what some people want, but you don't actually believe they expect such an
outcome. It's a negotiating tactic.

Nearly Half of Coral Reefs in Peril
By The Associated Press

posted: 25 October 2005
12:26 pm ET

"It can decrease coral cover or
deplete fish populations that are important for the coral reef
ecosystem.

If one area of the ocean becomes too warm to support coral life, then that
means that another area a little further away from the equator has
temperatures that better support coral life. Maybe the Key's coral reefs
will relocate to a more hospitable environment up by Harry. And maybe the
mollusks will follow...because God knows that they need a lot of mollusks

up
that way to filter all the verbal feces coming out of his region.

Coral is even more affected by starfish. We have had global warming and

the Pacific. The question is what is causing Global Warming. A group of

One major volcanic eruption spews more ozone depleting chemicals in a week
than mankind does in years. When Krakatoa erupted in 1883, upper
Midwesterners almost starved that year. Between the ash and chemicals, it
induced a volcano winter. Was snow in the Midwest in July and the corn crop
failed. We are seeing more solar activity. This does not count? maybe it
is man and all the political spewing that is contaminating the air and
causing the hot air warming. These same "Scientists" were predicting a
mini-iceage circa 1970. Maybe ice age grant money dried up. As to Kyoto.
Would only hamper the US. France, being 80% nuclear at the time, was posice
to make a killing selling electric power. China, could still go along,
burning excess amounts of dirty coal, and no penalty, as they are a
"Backwards" country. China is the biggest cause of mercury in tuna and
other pelegic fish. All that coal burning release of mercury has to go
somewhere, and that is out over the Pacific.

And meanwhile, Kevin is running around in his tin foil hat screaming
the
sky is falling.
I assume you have information indicating that the science behind this
is all wrong. Coral are not being affected as described. Your
information sounds interesting. Got links?

Coral is even more affected by starfish. We have had global warming and
cooling for eons. The coral survives. Survived enough to make atolls
in the Pacific. The question is what is causing Global Warming. A
group of non-physical scientists came up with the Kyoto Agreement, and
blamed it all on mankind. Why did we have a mimi-iceage 10,000 years
ago. Mankind not burn enough wood?

What if they're right? Or, more important, is is possible for there to be
ANY evidence that would convince you?

McKee, like most Republicans, buys into the "we have nothing to do with
global warming" argument because he thinks taking it seriously might
result in some sort of "restrictions." His dismissal of the evidence that
exists has nothing to do with science, or, in fact, anything but
conservative politics. Ergo, there is no evidence that would convince him
otherwise.

And where is your scientific proof that Global warming is 100% man's fault?
Oh, forgot, you are not a scientist.

It's the RATE of change in global temperature. Funny coincedence for
you non-science christian right wingers, the rate of change in global
temperature is in direct correlation with the amount of CFC's in the
air.....hmmmm......

Proof? If it was so obvious, why are not all scientists, at least the hard
sciences, on board?
