Kind of interesting, since Bush does very little actual "work" as POTUS.

Too busy handing out untendered contracts to Haliburton & friends.

Worse thing, other than a photo op is for a POTUS to arrive in a disaster
area. All the security, traffic problems, etc that are caused. What the
hell is Clinton doing, except photo ops? He using a shovel, hammer?

I believe Clinton and Bush I were asked by our current President to head
up to fund raise for Katrina victims.

Worse than having the POTUS show up at a disaster is the POTUS sitting on a
runway at LAX getting a hair cut while all other air traffic in and out is
re-routed.

Is this the haircut in question?

Bill,
If you read rec.boats you will see that many politicos like to use anything
for political gain. It is understood by all, that a disaster visit is a
political photo op to show the world the politician "feels their pain". The
photo op does come at a substantial cost in diverted resources when they are
desperately need to protect and save lives.

A leader does not need to make the visit to understand the magnitude of the
problem. When you read rec.boats you see there are people who turn anything
the political opponent does negatively. If the president does not visit the
disaster, he doesn't care, if he does visit the disaster site, it is a photo
op for political gain. .

Thunder,
You are correct, and it is possible Clinton's trip will keep the disaster
relief effort on the public's mind, but it is a photo op, the same as when
Bush made his trip to NO was a photo op. We should not expect or even want
our politicians to visit disaster sites because it does divert resources
from where they are needed most. Yet if you read rec.boats, you can see how
people will spin a visit or a "non-visit" anyway they want.

I believe Clinton made the trip because he believed it would help raise
money and provide emotional support to those in need. The fact that
Clinton, or any ex-president, enjoys the limelight, does not diminish the
major reason he made the visit. The "Limelight" was just a bonus for
Clinton's ego, not his main objective.

No, he was appointed to find areas where the money can be best spent. I
can't resist grin Something the democrats are known for, spending money.

Anyway good for him as he, I'm sure has more energy than 80+ year old former
president Bush. I'm sure he will probably do a better job that the Federal
government. And that statement is not political, just facing facts...no
matter who controls it the Federal government is not designed to be
efficient.

Harry,
Anyone who would use his quick photo op as the basis for where to spend
money is an idiot. Clinton is not an idiot. The visit was a photo op to
draw attention to the fund raising, and to show the public that he feels
their pain.

You on the other hand, could learn from Clinton.

He's there getting information to help decide how best to spend the money
he and former President Bush have raised. Former President Bush will be
touring the stricken areas next week.

I do agree, though, that when Dubya goes to those areas, it is only for a
photo-op.
