Mercruiser coupler replacement / transom issues

Common? NO. Posible? YES. Did mechanic check the rubber bellows for
cracks? That's where my 1984 Stingray started to leak. Not the
transom.

Is replacing the transom on a 10 year old boat a common thing? Just
want to make sure my buddy isn't getting a raw deal.
