Another case of not believing all you read. Nova Scotia has had a large
black population since black loyalists settled here after the American
Revolution...and yes the British did keep some slaves here but the
practice
was eliminated well before your Civil War.
Toronto didn't surpass us on a percentage basis for black population (if
they do now) until the flood of immigration from the Caribbean since the
'60s. You could probably say most of Toronto's black population is either
1st or 2nd generation from the islands while Nova Scotia's is multi
generation citizens since the 1700's.
Most of the killings in Toronto seem to be gang related.


According to the 2001 Canadian census, blacks account for only 2.2% of Nova
Scotia's population.
