Devens are finally enjoying some growth and recovery. When the base was operating, the towns were fairly typical base towns, particularly Ayer, and they were devastated when Devens closed. Now the bulk of the base infrastructure area has been converted to commercial/industrial development, and is showing some success. Ayer, Harvard, Lancaster, and Shirley are also experiencing growth and construction as population moves to the area to take advantage of additional ongoing development along the I-495 belt nearby. You might be favorably impressed by Ayer Main Street today. Thanks for the info. I didn't even know Ft. Devins had closed, which shows how much attention I've been paying. At the time, I was bringing home about $130/mo, counting the wife's allotment. We didn't have enough money to do much 'touristing'. The 196th Brigade, my unit, was gearing up for Vietnam, so I didn't have a lot of free time. We did manage to get to the dog races in Boston, I think, a couple times a month. That was cheap. -- John H "All decisions are the result of binary thinking." |
