Gasoline Theft: Coming to a Marina Near You?

CNN had a number of reports today about gasoline theft from camper parking
lots, pre-school parking lots, et cetera.

Think we'll have cases of fuel siphoning from boats at marinas?

I do.

Removing fuel (and tires, engine, battery) from RVs is OK with me. :-)

Too bad they're typically different sizes, or a sure cure for the
fuel thieves would be to swap the cap labeled "fuel" on the fuel filler
with the cap labeled "waste" on the deck fitting for holding tank pump
out. One big suck on the plastic hose to get the suction going and the
resulting "mouthful" would cure most fuel thieves on the very first
attempt. (You would want to swap them back before somebody not familiar
with the boat ever attempted to fuel it for you).

In reality, I think it might be pretty east to siphon gas or diesel
from a boat on a trailer, but wouldn't you need a pump if the boat is
in the water? Most fuel tanks are at least partially below the
waterline, and I think that while a siphon hose can run uphill for a
distance- doesn't it have to terminate at a point lower than the
material being siphoned.

IF I remember correctly you can't even siphon from car fuel tanks any more
as they has screens in them. Has anyone even tried this recently???
Not sure about boats..

I know quite a few Japanese cars have these springs, but most American cars
dont.

I helped out on a fuel pump change in a friends 2004 Caviler, and siphoned
the fuel out with a full size garden hose.

No.

I do.

That's because you're an idiot. 99% of boats fuel tanks are below the water
line, making it impossible to siphon.

Of course, I would only expect somebody familiar with boats to know that...

I saw the price being changed at the corner BP this morning from $2.36 to
$2.69.

Yeah, and nobody has yet developed any sort of manual or 12v DC
powered pump, so pumping gas out of boats would be absolutely
impossible, too!!!

Wrong. Those pumps do exist. Along with manual hand-crank pumps too.

What was that about being familiar with boats, Wetsock?

Perhaps you should read a bit slower...the method being discussed is
"siphoning", not pumping.

And I have probably forgotten what you will ever know about boats.

Bwhahahahahahahahaha!

Back at cha, my English challenged friend. :)

It's already happened: http://tinyurl.com/8oel7
I reported back in August when my uncle had about 2/3 of his gas stolen
(about 70 gallons, probably all the thieves could carry) while at his
slip in our large public marina.

Harry,
Are you thinking about going over to get some free gas, or boat parts?

There's at least 150 boats on trailers at a marina near me...I wonder if
anyone watches the place after hours.

NO! Really?

Yes. Really.

I guess my very obvious and pointed sarcasm parted your hair in the
middle as it flew over your head.

No, not really. Just demonstrating how ridiculous you sound. But you're
right...you don't need any help from me.

reading is not your problem. Comprehension is your problem, dimwit.

What grade are you in?

Please read the subject line to find out what the thread is about.

My reply was a direct response to Krause's observance that the "siphoning"
of fuel would be coming to the marinas.

Again...maybe if you go back and read s-l-o-w-e-r...

Oh, I sincerely doubt that, although if you ever knew anything at all,
it does appear you've forgotten it, Wetsock.

Take care Rusty, and good luck in the new school year.
