I bought a 1976 McKee craft cat cay with a 70hp Johnson outboard. The
problem I am having is that after the boat runs for an hour or so and I idle for a few mins it will die and refuse to start for about a half hour and then today I put into the water and it would not start. Had plenty of battery to turn the moter over and new fuel mix but it would not start, can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in adance Bill |

I can't tell you how many people in over 30 years of boating that by lending a fellow boater a hand had turned there day into a better experience. Sometimes a shot or 2 of starting fluid was all they needed. Today, besides the starting fluid, I carry an extra long set of jumper cables. Between the starting fluid and jumper cables, I was able to help a few stranded boaters get back to dock. I also carry a 100' 1/2" tow line. I have towed some back in too. Though many people have offered me money for helping them, we always refuse. Our (my wife is always with me) standard answer is "If you ever have a chance, return the favor to someone else". Good luck, let us know what the real problem was. Regards, SOB Thanks for the reply. The starter fluid didn't help unfortunatly, a fellow boater tried that and it didn't work. ![]() extra cheap starter battery I picked up on sale ( 5 whole dollars) to give to someone if they need it, good for one shot probably but if it helps some one............. And as soon as I find out the problem I will post it here, maybe someone else may have the problem and know what to look for. Thanks again Bill |

Fuel, Air, Compression, Spark....
Check fuel lines & filter for crud buildup or splits/holes. Check gas tank for debris- flush out if found. Clean carb- take apart & rebuild if necessary. Check choke for proper operation. Check spark plug- remove plug, crank engine while holding attached plug with an insulated tool very close to engine block- check for weak spark. If weak spark, check ignition system. (Coil, points, wires, plugs, etc) Check cylinder compression. Check for water (and/or antifreeze if closed system) in engine oil. wrote in message ... Thanks in adance Bill An engine needs three things to come together in the cylinder to run. Air, Fuel, Spark. First thing to do is to see if the cylinder is really getting the three. If all those are present in the cylinder you can move on to things like compression and timing, but, until you verify you have the right ingredient for ignition there isn't much sense in going further. The above is, of course, assuming the engine is actually turning over when cranked, it is out of gear, and it has received the lubrication needed when it was running. -- Mike G. One thing to check is a wire grounding out. Being that old you very well
may have some primary or secondary wires with broken insulation. I've had a coil on a 25hp Johnson break down and cut me down to one cylinder. Took me forever to find it. The Parts/service shops wanted to sell me first a trigger, then a power pack when all along, it was the coil. I found it running the motor in shallow water with the cover off, jiggling wires until I saw the spark jump. --------just something else to try. LD wrote in message ... I just bought the Johnson manual for my motor, and it places great emphasis
on checking the simple things first, so time & money aren't wasted. Sounds like your shops hadn't heard of the idea. Now...I'm gonna go jiggle wires, because my 15 hp Johnson's running really rough, and stalling at very low idle. New plugs, too. It's beyond me why I changed them in October 2 years ago, and then stuck the boat in the garage. Should've changed them in the spring. "LD" wrote in message ...
